$2 Bills

2_dollar_bill.gifApparently some people have never heard of a $2 (US) bill. After reading that story, I made up my mind to try to find a bunch of $2 bills with which to buy things so that I can keep track of the odd reactions I'm bound to get from people. My favorite piece:

Guard: "So, the fifty's fake?"
Manager: "No, the $2 is."
Guard: "Why would he fake a $2 bill?"

It is at this point that it becomes clear that the guard knows there is such a thing as a $2 bill, and the manager clearly does not. Funny shit. 😀

P.S. Anyone looking to buy me a birthday present (y'know, March 23) is encouraged to visit http://www.bep.treas.gov/store/section.cfm/69/84. Yessum!

  1. $2 Bills

Not that I can truly blame them, but some people don't know that $2 bills ever existed. Are these bills still in print anymore? I should ask my mom, considering she is a banker. Read the story, it is funny. [via NSLog();]...

  2. Surely you've heard that Steve Wozniak often buys sheets of perforated $2 bills and has fun trying to use them. TidBITS mentions that in an old issue, and you can find other comments about Woz's antics by googling for "wozniak sheets bills".

  3. From an interview on Woz's site:

$2 bills are rare. I got lots years ago, then got brand new uncirculated ones in serial number order. Then, thanks to Jesse, found out that you can get $1 and $2 bills in sheets of 4, 16 or 32. So I buy sheets and cut them strangely like one bill and part of another. When I pull out a sheet to pay for something and act strangely, clerks sometimes refuse them or grab me. The cops have been called a couple of times. I usually say I bought them from a guy wearing a blue mumu for $1.35 each and I don't know how he does it but I'm sure they're legal.

  4. I have a 1952 $2 bill w/red seal. Do you have any info. Thanks

  5. I once was able to get from an Iowa bank that bound them, book like,in any quantity or denomination. I used to get books of 25 $2 bills and used them for tips, pealing off one or more depending on service. Always got a good reaction.

That bank no longer offers this service. Do you know of a source for same?

  6. Hi guys! I've never replied to a thread before so here goes. Yes, $2 bills are still printed to this day. They were reintroduced in 1976 for the Bicentennial, reissued again in 1995, and again in 2003. I went to a bank at Christmas time and they had brand new ones still in the governement wrapper. Tellers seem to hate them and love to get rid of them at the end of the day. Go to any national bank on a Friday and you can get as many as you want. I think they are printed more as a novelty and sold as such but they are still currency. They are literally printed in the hundreds of millions. I give them as tips etc. and get good reactions. Spend 'em and have fun.
