In response to John, I believe that's because those aren't real links, but Javascript. Try it with the real links at the bottom of the page, and it works.

I got around this by using something like span class="smallcode" followed by a pre tag. Of course, I don't know what the hell I'm doing (nothing validates yet), so it was just dumb luck that it worked.
