Is there any way to leverage this for protection from automated bots -- such as spam harvesters? Obviously wouldn't work for email addresses directly, maybe to prevent content from being properly indexed?

Hmmm... just thinking out loud.

Ieednd.

I read that surprisingly easy. That can indicate one of two things:

1. It really doesn't matter what order the letters in a word are, as long as the first and last letters are the same.

2. I've been reading too much Jeff K.

Well, that example isn't truly random. It looks shuffled by hand, with a heavy bias to keep letters in their respective half of the word.

I threw together a quick Perl hack that randomizes words according to the criterions, and words longer than seven characters were more or less unreadable without major concentration.
