QotD: Fire a Gun

Question: Have you ever fired a gun? In as brief a statement as possible, also explain "why" or "why not."

My Answer: Yes. My dad taught me, and it's a skill and an activity I enjoy.

Brief statements like "I just don't want to," "I never had a real chance," and "My family hunts" are fine. Be reasonable or have your comment removed: no name-calling or fighting.

You are encouraged to answer the Question of the Day for yourself in the comments or on your blog.

  1. Yes.

    .22 Rifle

    9 mm handgun

    357 handgun

My dad has guns on his property and it's fun to see how poorly a city boy shoots.

  2. No, because I've never had the chance. I'd like to just to say that I did, although given my personality it's something I'd only imagine doing sparingly.

  3. The Marine in me says "you mean weapon, not gun." 🙂

Everything in the USMC small-arms inventory, plus the Mk19 and 25mm Bushmaster. The M1911-pattern semi and M14 remain my all-time favorite small arms. Sadly my unit had neither in inventory.

  4. I did my military duty, so yes 🙂

Didn't particularly enjoy the circumstances, so I can't say I enjoyed firing those things. But it's not like we had a choice...

  5. Yes, in boy scouts, .22 rifle.

  6. I've gone shooting a number of times, both in boy scouts and as family activities. Nothing too extensive, though; just some 22s and a 44 magnum.

  7. I've never fired a weapon before, but I have held several. The largest being a pump-action rifle. (I'm clearly a novice on the subject, so I don't know the correct terminology.)

The only weapon I have fired is an arrow. Quite exhilirating when you hit a target with one of those. As for firearms, I would be interested in trying that out at least once.

  8. I have fired a .22 rifle.

Going to a US camp can be an interesting experience. I have seen a pump-action shotgun fired. (noisy sucker)

And frankly, thats was enough for me. If I live the rest of my days, I would be very glad if I never see another one fired (Be it a shotgun or any other rifle/pistol)

  9. A rifle in Boy Scout camp. Probably a .22, but I don't remember. Damn, was I lousy. Very little since then.

I've been meaning to get a permit for some time now, but I've just never gotten around to it.

  10. As my PO used to say...

"This is my rifle, this is my gun...

This is for shooting, this is for fun."

with hand alternating between weapon and crotch.

  11. I haven't, but I hopefully will be soon. I'm hoping to get a CCL or a CHL (is there a difference between the two?) when I turn 21, much to my mother's displeasure, so I gotta figure out how that whole gun thing works (yes, I'm a Democrat who is pro gun. Still don't know how that came about).

  12. Yes, several times. Pistols: 9mm, 10mm, .40, .45, .357, and probably others.

I'm a big fan of the second amendment. 🙂

  13. Yes, I have.

I shot .22 pellet rifles as a boy. I shot cans and targets and over the heads of stray dogs in the yard scaring our chickens.

I fired numerous guns in the military.

My favorite is Browning Hi Power. If I were to ever own a handgun, I would purchase one.

However, as the father of three daughters, and a Japanese wife who HATES guns (NY State law: if your wife doesn't want you to own a handgun, you CAN'T get one), I'll never fire another gun in my life.

But that's not a bad thing.

  14. Yeah, I got to shoot a .22 when I was like 13 or something at my little brother's Boy Scout camp when I visited him there for a "family day" or something. We also got to try archery, which I liked better.

  15. .22, .25, .380, .38, .357, .44Mag, .45ACP, .45 Colt, 30-06, 30-30, .223, 45-70, .270, 300 Win Mag. I've shot a few. 🙂

I have a nostalgic attachment to the 1911A1 that I just can't explain, even 'though I think the Browning Hi-Power is a better gun.
