Music Videos on iTMS

I can see people buying TV shows for their iPod. Heck, if I had a commute, I'd buy some TV shows to watch going and coming to work.

But I think music videos may be the bigger catch, the bigger draw. They're dual-purpose, in fact: if the music video comes up in a random playlist while you're in your car or jogging or whatever, the music plays regardless of whether you're looking at the video or not.

The question I have, then, is whether the music in the video is the same quality as the individually downloadable songs. And, regardless of whether it is or isn't, do you think Apple should include the individual song file when you purchase the music video?

I do. If I buy a music video, I'd like to have the full-quality song available. I don't want to spend $2.98 to get both. Why would I want the song separately? It's easier to work with (adding a tune to an iMovie, etc.).

  1. Question: Have you bought any iTunes videos yet? My Answer: I have not. I was tempted to grab the Pixar shorts, but I don't really want to look at my iPod to see them. I don't have any commutes, so...

  2. If you get info on an ITMS video, does it reveal the codec settings used. down to the audio settings?

  3. Videos bought from iTunes are encoded in AAC (protected), stereo 44.1kHz. Same as the songs bought from iTunes music store. Video is using AVC0 Media 320x240, million of colors.

  4. AVC stands for Advanced Video Coding. 🙂

  5. At least from my POV, I don't care for music videos. They're usually just weird/random, and I tend to like the songs a lot more before I see the video. I think the killer app will be something for Tivo so that you can transfer your own content to it. Make the app free, and it lets Tivo sell Tivos and Apple sell iPods. Put Fairplay around the transfer to keep the networks happy, and there you go. The more I think of it, the more I don't want a DVD->iPod solution, as I wouldn't want to watch 90 minutes of content on the screen. Now maybe if there was a way to put the Family Guy series DVDs I own onto it easily... 🙂

  6. You can play the song without playing the video; if you randomly play your songs, it should include the audio file attached to the video.

  7. If you use Get Info in iTunes, it says "Bit Rate: 128 kbps."
