Why I Won’t Buy Zelda for the Wii

This about sums it up:

If Wii Sports is for the non-gamers, Twilight Princess is for the hardcore. After I spent 10 hours with the game, I barely managed to squeak by two temples, with the third so far off that I could scarcely imagine getting there, let alone approach the objective. (For the record, out of 30 or so journalists, nobody came close to the third temple.) I asked how long it took Nintendo's testers to complete the entire game the first time through. The answer is a whopping 70-plus hours. Adding insult to injury, diabolical Nintendo translator and localization manager Bill Trinen told me that he was working on his second play-through of the game. Knowing what to do and where to go, and skipping cut-scenes, Trinen said that he had logged about 27 hours to make it approximately two thirds of the way through the temples themselves - and that doesn't account for any of the side quests or time-sucks like fishing, a single operation that could easily add hours upon hours to Zelda's depth.

I simply don't have that much time. I need games I can pick up and play for 10 minutes at a time.

  1. Yep. The 360's Live Arcade series of games is interesting to me for this reason.

  2. From what I've read, they've finally implemented a "save anywhere you want, and start from where you saved" feature (although I believe you have to get some special item to do so in dungeons) .. which should help make that easier.

But yeah, this is going to be a massive timesuck. Goodbye weekends, for a little while..

But it's Zelda, and apparently a really good Zelda, so it'll be worth it. As to whether my family agrees.. well, I don't know. My girlfriend liked watching me play Wind Waker (aside from waiting for me to sail between islands) and I imagine my grandfather will be amused to see me play using that new controller.

  3. What games do you currently play?

I don't really play any games currently. I haven't really played my PS2 or GameCube for a few months.

  5. What are some of your favorite "play for 10 minutes at a time" games?

    Who are you? Nielsen? 😛

Most sports games. Super Monkey Ball. Rayman Raving Rabbids. I'm getting those two, Madden, and Call of Duty 3 for the Wii launch.

  7. Ha no, I have been having video game cravings lately and looking for new games to get my fix.

I enjoyed the Rayman back in the day on my XBox. Actually, I tried that game after discovering it was by the same designer Michel Ancel as my favorite console game Beyond Good & Evil (2003). BG&E was a surprisingly short game after the Bioware 80 hr + computer games had set my expectations.

Super Monkey Ball on N64 is a wicked good party game.

I have not owned the last couple generations of Nintendo, but I am tempted to get this one.

  8. I went through the same thing last year. I hadn't really played video games because they all took too long to play. So, this year I got a Nintendo DS Lite. I love it. It's the king of the 10 minute playtime (or something like that).
