Garmin, Where are You?

I'm posting this at the request of a friend.

At the MacWorld Expo in January, Garmin announced they would be working on officially supporting Mac OS X 10.4 by the end of 2006. Eleven months later and Garmin has made no further comments regarding support for the Mac. Earlier this year, Garmin listed software engineer positions requiring Cocoa experience. Those listings are there (presumably they've been filled), so hopefully progress is being made.

Give us a sign Garmin! A lot of GPS geek Mac users are eagerly awaiting official Mac support!

  1. There was an announcement mid-year, but it basically reiterated the January announcement. I'm watching Garmin too, since I want to buy a new GPSr. I'm looking into the GPSMAP 60CSx, btw.

I just use Parallels today, but having native software would be so much better.

  2. Do you mean there is someone at Garmin who actually knows that the Mac exists? Maybe he's working in the cubicle next to the guy who discovered the existence of USB three days ago.

  3. I emailed Garmin awhile ago inquiring about the release and whether or not there would be a beta program (they offer betas other products so I was optimistic). I received the standard canned response about using a particular shareware program to manipulate way-points or using VPC to run the Windows version of MapPoint to actually the load the maps (which is the functionality that I really want).

Only 48 days until the end of 2006 (and 57 until the _next_ MacWorld) doesn't leave too much time left. It would be a nice Christmas present.

  4. Hey Aaron, does this (finally) count?

  5. The Garmin Training Center, while a good first effort, isn't the full MapSource support that they promised they'd deliver by the end of 2006 at MW'06. We'll see what they have to say at MW'07.
