Trip to the Cleveland Zoo

Today I visited the Cleveland Zoo. It was very easy to find and it only took 1:40 to get there.

Some photos from the trip appear below. I took everything I own (basically), but only used the 70-200/2.8 IS all day. I should have probably put the circular polarizer on - it would have helped a few of the indoor shots with reflections from the glass - but oh well. Crops applied with little to zero other post-processing.

Cleveland Zoo 4

The koala baby was asleep with its mother.

Cleveland Zoo 5

This bird later squawked and flapped its wings and really put on a show. By the time I got back to where I could take a picture, it had stopped. 😛

Cleveland Zoo 6

Do lemurs believe in a God? This one looks like it's searching the heavens for one.

Cleveland Zoo 7

I forget the name of this animal, but it looked so awkward and so human-like, sitting there, hands on its knees, taking a nap in the afternoon sun.

Cleveland Zoo 8

This cat posed for quite awhile before wandering back to the recesses of its area for a mid-day snooze.

Cleveland Zoo 9

Presque Isle and even Lake View Country Club have bald eagles now, but I don't remember the last time I saw one. Until now, anyway.

Cleveland Zoo 10

What a life. The Cleveland Zoo had tigers and bears, but no lions.

Cleveland Zoo 11

The rhino later ran away, stunning most of the people with its speed. Its partner was, like most of the other animals at the zoo, taking a nap.

Cleveland Zoo 12

Another napping animal. This one had a purple tail (another shot of it in the sun shows the tail nicely). I don't know if the purple is natural or dyed so that zookeepers can quickly identify the animal.

Cleveland Zoo 13

I took a few shots of seagulls. None got quite close enough to really fill the frame - this is a crop. I did get to practice my panning, at least.

  1. Some great photographs in here! I really want to get into photography, but haven't really got a clue where to begin or to even look for answers. I'm off on a cruise for 6 months in 4 weeks so I'd need to get some gear pretty quickly. Any advice?

Pick up a decent point-and-shoot, a lot of memory cards, and just be happy with the results you get? It would be rather difficult to pick up the tricks of a DSLR (not to mention fairly expensive) in such a short amount of time. It can be done, but my hunch is you'll have other things to do in those four weeks.

    Learn when you return.

  3. Thanks for the advice, Erik... I've got a pretty decent Point-and-Shoot at the moment which creates some fairly decent results.

It's just that I very interested in learning all about the different lenses, aperutre settings, exposures, etc... Especially because there are so many good photo opportunities that arise whilst we're out and about travelling the world!

I probably won't have the time to get anything decent before we go away, but if last time is anything to go by, there's lots of good (read: cheap) electronics shops around that sell photography equipment and it'd be great to have a clue what I'm looking at to make sure I don't buy anything that won't serve me well.

Have you by any chance got any general tips?

    Thanks...

    Matt

  4. Hi! I think Cleveland has Lions - they are located right next to the food court across from the Elephants. The little guy with his hands on his knees is a blueeyed black lemur (clever name hu?) and the monkey with the purple tail is a Colobus monkey. I am not sure why his tail is purple... you could ask the blog keeper at the zoo blog The roar report: http://www.clemetzoo.com/zblog
