Bad iPhoto Scroll Bars

Bad iPhoto Scroll BarsI'm sure I'll have more to say about iPhoto 7 (or iPhoto '08, whichever you prefer to call it) later, but my initial reaction was one of dismay. The "both at both ends""hidden" scroll bar setting doesn't work very well with iPhoto.

iPhoto did, fortunately, import my old "film rolls" the way I would expect - by making each film roll into an event. Since I'd basically been doing this anyway, it worked out well. I was annoyed that I could not select all of my film rolls (or events) and hit cmd-left arrow to collapse them all in the "Photos" view, but I did get to answer the age-old question: "How long does it take to click 258 disclosure triangles in various locations?"

My first .Mac Web Gallery was published. I think that link should work. I like 'em.

  1. Have you tried the possible solution that was presented in the comments to Gruber's flickr photo documenting the same bug?

Instead of the hidden option DoubleBoth, another option called DoubleMax is suggested:

    defaults write com.apple.iphoto AppleScrollBarVariant DoubleMax

That doesn't seem to work either. It draws scroll arrows at the top and bottom, but the top one is hidden by the scroll bar and the bottom one has the same artifacts. Only the bottom two (including the area where it's messed up) work as scroll arrows.

  3. The scrollbar thing was one of the first things I noticed, too.

And then all the disclosure triangle clicking. That took a while. 😡

The .Mac Web Gallery is cool, and definitely better than Apple's previous attempts.

  4. Option-click any of the disclosure triangles to open or close all of the Event collections.

This is a fairly standard Mac paradigm. But the simple fact that so many people missed it suggests that it needs to be better publicized.

  5. .Mac Web Gallery is spiffy, but what if I wanted to publish the gallery to a private domain off of Apple's servers? I could maybe embed the gallery page into my own website (use a frame or something), but it would break the visual style of my site (currently default WordPress K2, but working on a custom theme for later this month), and it may not even be possible - although I haven't tried yet. With the old iPhoto, you could export "to Web Page" and then tweak and upload it wherever you wanted. I think you can still do that too, but the Flashed up web gallery is so much snazzier.

Anybody know if it is possible to get your web gallery published to a private domain/server?

Indeed, that works for closing or opening all items.

I used the left and right arrows (which also works in the Finder's list view and other places) in previous versions of iPhoto, and that method offered the advantage of acting only on selected items.

So, it still seems a behavior/"feature" has been removed from iPhoto 7 ('08).
