Aperture 3.0 Wishlist

I saw this post at flickr and I've compiled my own wish list, in order of importance, for Aperture 3.0:

  1. Non-destructive plugins. Currently I resist using a plugin and creating a 60 MB "second version" of a file just because I want to perform some simple thing Aperture can't do (like #4).
  2. Speed improvements, particularly when importing/exporting/building thumbnails. Right now I've found you're better off - even on a recent Mac Pro with 6 GB RAM - just letting the import finish before you try to do any other work.
  3. Buy Nik Software, include all plugins free. Of course, this ties into #1 as well, and if their control point stuff can be made to "just work" with all plugins, #4 might be irrelevant.
  4. Simple masking. I want to be able to change the color (or luminosity, or saturation, or whatever) of one thing without affecting another (example: shirt and sky).
  5. History for each image. Currently, hitting "undo" a few times can result in unwanted behavior as you'll undo changes on images at which you might not even be looking.
  6. A better way to create and share presets. Simple.
  7. In-Aperture HDR. Buy Photomatix? Maybe. Apple's got a lot of cash…

What's on your list, or what changes to the order of my list would you make?

  1. Excellent list. Every single one of them I agree with. #4 is has been the most wished-for.

Oh, and get more Ram 🙂 I upped to 10GB on my Mac Pro, couldn't be happier.

  2. Something tells me nikon is not going to sell Nik to apple.

Nikon doesn't own Nik software. Nikon made a capital investment back in 2006 in Nik software, but that's about all we know. Nik software produces software (Capture NX) for Nikon cameras, but that wouldn't have to change. Or Nik could simply sell some of their software to Apple.

  4. Masking in Lightroom looks pretty good.

  5. Canon sRAW1 and sRAW2 support for the new Canon EOS 5D Mark II.

  6. A descent chroma noise reduction... at least as effective as Lightroom 2 or Capture One 4.

  7. How about a ROES plugin so we can place lab orders from within aperture to your preferred pro lab. The plug-in can ad something like a system were you can specify sizes and quantaties ordered per each image within project, or album. I envision an added panel tab to show the ROES lab order features within aperture. This would save lots of time on having to resize, export, save, space on HD,

visit bayphoto.com if you are not familier with the ROES ordering system, its very easy, fast, organized, and you are able to see order status at all time.

test ROES many pro labs across US are offering it.

  8. Here's the email I sent to the Aperture team at Apple....

    1) The ability to merge projects! This works great in iPhoto (merging, splitting events)

    2) The overall UI (non full-screen mode) seems very 'un-Apple' (and un-iLife App). I know this is a pro app but the UI in non full-screen mode looks like it was an afterthought. All the buttons (like close -x-) are extremely small. The font on most menu items is small. The colors are drab (I understand the reasoning for gray so it doesn't distract from the photo but how about making it appear a little shinier - like iPhoto or even -gasp- Lightroom?)

    3) Projects vs. Albums. I hate the fact that I imported my iPhoto library as individual projects...should have done them as Albums. I want one project labeled Christmas (with subordinate folders) - not 10! I know I can reconfigure to use one main project and 10 albums underneath but that will be a huge overhaul for all projects.

    4) Batch operations: I know you can lift/stamp metadata but how about a separate menu/button for assigning metadata via a batch operation? If flickr/iPhoto can do it- why can't Aperture?

    5) New iPhoto features! I'm sure you've been asked this a 1000x now but how about the face recognition feature for Aperture?

    6) How about a script that can find duplicate photos?

    7) How about an option to just delete a photo when clicking delete- not command + delete. There's already a popup that warns you!

    8) Why can't Aperture be closed by clicking a red x at the top left window? That just doesn't seem consistent with the OS.

    9) How about a photo count next to the project folder?

    10) How about an option to set a picture as the desktop? I know that can be done in system preferences but would still be nice.

    11) How about a feature to create/export a composite? Like an extension to the light table? I know this can be done in photoshop but would like to do it in-house.

I realize that Aperture is a pro app and is probably designed/coded by a different team than the iLife/iPhoto team but some consistency across platforms would be nice. I'm guessing as a lot of amateurs take the plunge and by a dslr (like myself) they'll want a beefier program to use to edit/manage photos (other than iPhoto). Why not make the switch a little more compelling? Some more familiarity would be nice.

  9. One more sugestion to the whislist:
    Gard the slidehows like iPhoto.

  10. 1.) Face detection like in iPhoto (metatag names automatically)

2.) A way to store and manage video files from my still camera.

3.) Extra flagging or tagging options beyond 5 stars (color code?).

4.) Second drive instant back-up on import (like in CaptureOne) or the ability to add vault support to referenced images.

5.) Tethered shooting support for my 5DMkII and 1DMkIII or remote control of my camera (iPhone support?)

6.) Audio tagging support for pro cameras (1DMkIII voice memo).

7.) Better selective color adjustments (like LightRoom)

8.) Improve chroma/contrast noise correction and sharpening.

9.) Album design and printing design templates that are compatible with other labs (BayPhoto, WHCC, BuckEye, KISS).

10.) CaptureOne's Focus Mask to determine the plane of focus with ease.

11.) Lens correction and color shift like DX Optics.
