Buying a MacBook or MacBook Pro – New Models When?

A friend needs a Mac laptop (and not the Air).

The last MacBook release was May of 2010.

The last MacBook Pro release was April 2010.

According to the Buyer's Guide lists both as "don't buy" right now ((The page isn't loading properly right now, but as of ten days ago it they were "don't buy.")).

It's awfully close to Christmas… and today's announcement is from iTunes (about the Beatles I'd guess)… so when will he be able to buy a new MacBook/MacBook Pro?

  1. Why would they be listed as "don't buy" now? Both are only a few months old, so my guess is that they won't be updated again for a few more months. It's easy to get caught up in waiting for what's next, but if he needs it now he should buy it now.

  2. I buy a new MacBook Pro in November every 3 years. It's been three years since my last MacBook Pro and I'm expecting a new one this month.

MacBooks are updated an average of every 195 days (6 months) while MacBook Pros are updated every 208 days (7 months).

    Counting backwards, MacBooks were released in months #5, 10, 5, 10, 2, 11, 5, 11, and 5 going back to 2006. MacBook Pros were released in 4, 6, 10, 2, 6, 10, 4, 1, 10 through late 2005.

That's why he should wait. It makes little sense if you're close to the release of a new system to buy if you don't absolutely need it. You're better off waiting if you can afford to wait.

Yes, some people take that to extremes and never end up buying, but he's not looking at it long term. Just "by the end of the year" type terms.
