These certificates can be used by Apple developers with a future version of the Apple Mac OS to sign software for electronic distribution
Found at thawte.com. Will this be what ties into the Software Update system Apple is rumored to be "opening up"?
Prices are $199 for one year and $399 for two years (which makes me wonder if I could buy two one-year certificates and save a dollar).

Oooo, spiffy. So, either an authenticated Software Update with TP support (highly unlikely) or at the very least an authenticated Installer a la Microsoft's authenticated driver installs.

This looks very cool. I was hoping Apple was going to get around to doing something like this. Just makes sense.

It does look like something that will just make a lot of sense once it's in the wild. My only problem is the price. That's a bit steep for the small software houses out there. I wish they were around $100/year. Oh well, I'm sure I'll pay it regardless. Just add it to the cost of development.

This is really necessary. But so much of the software people use is shareware or freeware, and $199 might be a bit steep for some. People are going to be accustomed to running a lot of unauthenticated software anyway, so they'll be used to clicking past any "Warning, this software isn't signed!" dialogs.

What's the point of this? There's no way that Thawte can do any reasonable verification of whether a software developer is trustworthy, and certainly not for $199.
