Stupid CSS

I'm very frustrated with CSS right now. I'm sure I'm brain farting, but I can't figure out how to do something and I'm about to give up and use a table. I've got an 85 x 85 image (the site's logo) that will go in the top left corner of a Web page. To the right, I've got a 500 x 40 image with a 3-pixel line at the bottom (the site's title). Beneath that, I've got six other images (the site's menu), all 30 pixels high.

I can easily arrange that. What I can't seem to get is a background image to appear and be 100% wide - it's a line that is meant to "extend" the line in title image. I've tried arranging the DIVs as many ways as I can think of. I can get the menu to the right of the logo, beneath the title, but then the background line doesn't extend all the way to the right-hand side of the browser. The list goes on and on…

So now I've cheated. I didn't use tables, but I did set the lined image as the background image for the site, without y-tiling. This is only temporary - I'll need to use an actual background image eventually, and then I'll be back to square one. For the mockup, for now, this will suffice.

If you wish to try your hand at this, by all means, AIM me. Problem solved, or rather, "worked around."

QotD: Romance

Question: If you could have a romance with any fictional character, who would it be?

My Answer: I'm going to rule out movies (those not based on books, anyway), because that makes it too easy - I might just pick someone (like Kate Beckinsale's character from Serendipity) because of the actor, not the character. So, limiting myself to literature, I'm going to have to go with… ummm… You know what? I haven't got a clue. It's been nearly a decade since I've read a book with "characters" in it. I've stuck mainly to non-fiction, science, computing, and books like The Physics of Cooking. Hrmph. So, my answer is Kate Beckinsale's character Sara(h?) in Serendipity. I'm a cheater, yup.

Fishing Lake Ida with Ramos

José and I got out on Lake Ida around 10am today - a bit later than I'd like, but when you've got a kid (not me), not everything can suit your damn friend's wishes! 🙂

We launched, we paddled north, and we went right to the spot at which I caught fish last time. I caught one fish on my little pivoting crankbait (see image below). I switched to a "jerkbait" and treated it like it was a jig (raise the rod, lower and crank in the slack, rest, repeat) and tagged two more, both slightly bigger than the first fish (which itself was about 12").

We're still not sure what kind of fish this is. The picture here makes it look a bit paler than it was in real life. The fish is actually much pinker/oranger with darker green stripes. My thumb is covering up a lack spot that existed on all three fish. We paddled around for a bit, fished with some spoons and other lures, but the only thing we caught the rest of the afternoon were José's tree (lost the lure) and lily patch (recovered the lure). He did have a few hits on the crankbait earlier in the day.

QotD: Racist

Question: Have you ever been called a racist? For what?

My Answer: Yes. Most recently, I was called a racist for mentioning the color of some people fishing at a lake. You'll have to read the comments to see what a moron the person alleging the accusation may be.

Queer Eyes

So I've now seen an episode (or three) of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and I've gotta say that the only one who's not totally annoying is the food and wine guy. The others, well, they irk me. It's amusing television, and quite comical at times, but I must say I admire the straight guys a lot more for being able to tolerate the over-the-top gay vibe the others put out (no pun intended).

I'm sure I'll get blasted for this one, and I'm trying desperately not to say "not that there's anything wrong with that." I don't judge, and they're a smart group of people - I am just saying they're not my kind of people. They'd bug me. Well, that and they certainly wouldn't have any shortage of work in my apartment, that's for sure!

QotD: Pleasurable Sex

Question: If sex were not a pleasurable activity, by what percent do you think the world's population would be smaller?

My Answer: 50%. If sex weren't pleasurable, I think that a great many people wouldn't have sex except to have a family or to get more welfare money. "Accident" babies would be gone, teen pregnancy might very well vanish, and, well, as if I know! I'm saying 50% and sticking to it!

Baltimore 15, Pittsburgh 34

Given that I'm not home on Sundays, I've got to TiVo my Steelers all year and watch them in the evening. No sweat - I don't have to put up with commercials like the rest of you saps! 🙂

Unfortunately, as the Steelers are an AFC team, I do have to put up with the morons named Ian Eagle and Solomon Wilcots. I grimace every time Ian's name is pronounced. It's not "Eee-an" but "Eye-an." The announcing in the NFL, particularly on CBS, is horrendous. Fox does the job admirably, and ABC's Monday Night Football team do a great job, but CBS just plain sucks. They're not knowledgeable about the game, they aren't funny, and they add nothing but noise. I've chosen to watch most NFL games on CBS in a certain mode on my surround sound receiver that minimizes the chatter and maximizes the hitting and crowd noise.

QotD: Super Bowl 2003

Question: Who will win the Super Bowl in 2004?

My Answer: Why, the Pittsburgh Steelers, of course! You heard it here first!

QotD: Pete Rose

Question: Should Pete Rose be in the Hall of Fame? Should Shoeless Joe Jackson?

My Answer: Yes. Yes. If you need an explanation, then I doubt that any explanation will make any sense to you. 😛

QotD: Porn

Question: How much porn do you own?

My Answer: Owning and watching are two different things. In college, porn was almost like currency - having it meant you could trade it for a CD you wanted to borrow - all sorts of things. As such, I've got about 3 DVDs worth of porn. Where those DVDs are is another matter - packed up somewhere I'm sure. Porn that's readily accessible? Just some naked shots of a girl I know from the Playboy site.

Price Protection and Secessions

I bought a Daiwa Capricorn 2500 on August 27. A few days ago, I noticed that they were on sale. I went back to Sports Authority, picked up a Shimano Stradic 6000. Normally $149, it was on sale for $112.49 - a savings of over $37. The Capricorn used to be $114.99, but was now $86.24 - again a savings of nearly $30. The previous day, I'd returned a $320 GPS because I found it for $260 online (not yet purchased - may not purchase).

With the refund and discounts on the two reels, I ended up spending $88 for a $149 reel. At one point, the clerk said "I think you only have five days for this…" I said "no, it's a law, I have thirty days." However, now I'm curious: it is a law, right? And if so (I'm fairly certain it's so), how many people know this? How many people know that if you buy something, and it goes on sale or otherwise drops in price within 30 days, that you can claim the difference? Or maybe it's not a law.

Protandric Hermaphrodites

Interesting:

An interesting fact: Snook are protandric hermaphrodites, meaning that many change sex from male to female at some point in their lives. This transition usually occurs between two and seven years of age or when they reach a fork length of 17-30 inches. For this reason, most very large fish are females.

That, and much more, can be learned at Snookangler.com.

Do You Suffer From a Small Penis?

Sometimes I utterly and completely fail to understand how anyone opens spam, let alone responds to them. They ask you questions like "do you suffer from a small penis?" or "are you having trouble pleasing your wife?" "Overweight? We can help!" "Need a date?" "In Financial Trouble?" "Want bigger breasts?"

WHO opens this crap? Seriously? Ugh.

QotD: Gay

Question: What percentage of your acquaintances are gay or bisexual?

My Answer: I think that about 5% may be gay, and I'm positive that about 7% are gay. So, I'll say about 10% of the people I know are gay. Of my "friends," a word I reserve for about ten people in my life, one is bisexual.

Xounds 2.0

I see that Xounds 2.0 is out. I was a big fan of the Interface sounds in Mac OS 9, and I used Xounds for awhile on X, but since removing all "haxies" I've got increased application stability and a tweak faster speed of operation. The only third-party stuff that shows up in my System Preferences is my PowerMate control panel, Synergy's control panel, and TinkerTool.
