QotD: Karma

Question: Do you believe in karma (or "what goes around comes around?"

My Answer: I believe more in "people will get what's coming to them." In other words, I believe that evil people eventually screw over enough people that it hurts them when they need it, and nice people catch a break every now and then. I don't believe in karma per se, but just in the fact that people are eventually exposed for who and what they are. Kick a lot of dogs and some day your boss might see you do it, and look for an excuse to fire you (and then find one and can your ass), for example.

You are encouraged to answer the Question of the Day for yourself in the comments or on your blog.

  1. I believe karma manifests itself no more visibly than when driving. Traffic karma. Cut someone off, pass someone on a two-lane road, and you'll inevitably get caught at a red light that never changes or some similar transportation setback. I find my traffic karma comes back to me the same day, too. Vicious.

  2. I totally agree with Alexander's statement. After a couple speeding tickets, I now go exactly the speed limit on normal roads and rarely exceed 5mph over the speed limit on the highway. I try to be a courteous driver. I doesn't neccessarily pay back in visible ways, but I feel like I drive with a whole lot less stress than everybody else on the road. I see people speeding past me, swerving in and out of traffic and I think to myself "gosh, what could be so important? what awful stress." Plus theres always the joy of seeing someone haul ass from a red light, and then pull up next to them at the next stop.

  3. I'd like to believe, because my older brother who is living with me now is a complete jerk most of the time, but it doesn't really seem to work against him all that much.

Also, I don't think Karma would have much of an effect on some people, because there are people that are so out of tune with their actions and life's reactions that they wouldn't learn anything from their misfortunes anyway.

My roommate is kind of like this. He is perpetually angry. He does all this stupid stuff (like living an obesity causing lifestyle,) and then he wonders why he gets the shitty end of the stick (like having three different girl friends become "way too fat" during the course of his relationships with them.)

  4. A magazine seller came to my door yesterday selling, of all things, magazines. They were supposed to help her go on a trip or some crap. Her selling angles were great, "I used to be crippled...now I'm better...etc.", "buy a magazine and donate it to the children". But she asked me if I believed in Karma and that if I bought a magazine subscription I would be helping "somebody" out and then Karma would help me out. I said no. So I guess I have some bad Karma headed my way 🙁
