IE’s Page Holder

Every time I see a bunch of links to pictures I want to check out, I find myself doing one unusual thing: firing up Internet Explorer and using its sidebar "Page Holder" feature. Is there anything easier than clicking a series of links to flip through a series of pictures? The Page Holder gets rid of the "click, go back, click, go back, click, go back" nonsense and laughs in the face of "cmd-click, cmd-click, cmd-click" horseplay (which fails at keeping a history).

Why can't this feature be brought to Safari? If OmniWeb had it, I'd buy it today! Oh, Page Holder, how I still adore thee.

  1. I'd like to see the inverse of Safari's "Open in Tabs" feature in bookmark folders.

If I have a bunch of tabs open, it'd be nice if I could bookmark them all into a new folder, so that if Safari crashes or I have to shut down, I can get back to where I was just by going into that folder in bookmarks and choosing "Open in tabs"

This might be similar to a feature in OmniWeb 5.

  2. What about snapback in Safari?

  3. Snapback is the same as "back" in this capacity except that its button is harder to hit and it has a sillier keyboard shortcut.

  4. Why don't you just open them all in background tabs? I sometimes have a Firefox window open for days at a time with as many as 14 tabbed pages, waiting to be read. And on OS X too!

  5. Basil, did you read my entry? 😛

  6. You know, you might be able to do this with JavaScript. What you want, it sounds like, is to take the page you're currently looking at, put it in a frame on the left side of the window, and redirect all the links on that page to a frame on the right side of the window.

I'm not any good with JavaScript, so I won't bother even attempting it. But it sounds like one of those things that should be doable with a bookmarklet.

  7. When I run into that in OW I just cmd-click each link and then I have all the pictures open in inactive tabs.

Also, if it's a gallery type thing with Next/Previous links on each page you can just hit enter to go to the next page.

  8. Now that I think about it, there's a Firefox extension intended for, and I'm not joking, surfing porn. It goes through all the links in a page, finds all the ones that link to images, grab all the ones with similar names and open them in new tabs.

I guess the author wanted to have a hand free for his surfing.

  9. Opera has a linked window feature. Each link you open in the first window always opens up in the second window. Tile the windows for convenience.

  10. Somehow I don't think Jobs and Hyatt are going to want 3.0 to have Safari Porn as a feature.

  11. Dude, use Firefox. Thats all.

  12. Justin: They'd likely call it "One-Hand Browsing" and that just opens up a whole new can of jokes.

Which is entirely why they should do it. 😀

  13. I believe there is one bookmarklet that does something similar by creating a pop-up window with all the links and they are loaded in the background (parent) window when you click them.

  14. Daughter d/l'd & is using Envision v1.0b1 from Open Door Networks, Inc.

Heard her laughing madly one night and stopped to find out what was going on. She was using the program to flip thru some cartoons from GeekCulture.

Don't know if that program would meet your needs because I didn't notice what she was doing to flip through the cartoons.

BTW, some VERY good cartoons (saw myself in several).

If the beta is a free d/l then it might be worth an effort to get & check it out.

    G'ust.
