My Wedding, My House, and My Honeymoon

Carey and I were married on Friday, May 27, 2005. It was a small ceremony behind the district justice's office (the outgoing Frank Abate), next to a playground and near to some trees that "everyone picks." It cost all of $33.50, bringing our total spending for "the wedding" to a whopping $78.50. If you want to get married on the cheap, well, there you go. It can be done.

The thing for Carey and I is not that we didn't have a huge wedding. As I've mentioned before, she had that before and it did nothing for her in the end - she got divorced. I'm just happy to be marrying my best friend - I don't care much about the ceremony. I've heard before that a relationship is all about two people until they get engaged - then it's all about the families and friends. The couple getting married often gets lost in the shuffle.

Carey and I refused to get lost in the shuffle. We did what we wanted, and the money we've saved went into (or will go into) the house, our washer and dryer, our lawnmower, our hedge trimmers, and more. It'll go into starting a retirement fund and/or a college fund. It'll pay for itself in far more tangible things, things that actually matter.

Anyway, the financial side of things is probably the least important side of things. Carey and I come first, and my feelings for her and her for me. This girl that confused me so much in high school is finally mine, and we've got a great house and an incredible future ahead of us. Our marriage signifies not only how much we have left in front of us, but how far we've come in the past eight years.

The ceremony was short and sweet. The only real hiccup occurred when I hesitated before repeating a line with the word "God" in it. After all, I had been under the assumption that being married by a district justice meant a non-religious ceremony. I paused for a second or two before repeating the line, but what if I had been a Buddhist? Or an atheist? I dunno… and it wasn't worth worrying about. Just a point of curiosity.

We were married at 3pm. At 8am, we met our real estate gal at the house we're buying for our final walk-through. Everything looked good - the bathroom shower head wasn't really fixed, but we'll get a new one anyway. Then at 9am, we closed. I delivered a check for $38,715.12 and in exchange got… a binder full of paperwork. Whoopty doo. 😉 We just got word today that we can start moving in on Thursday. Wooohoo!

At 1:30, Carey and I visited JC Penney's to get some pictures taken. I hate getting my picture taken. After all, I tend to feel kinda ugly when I'm next to Carey, through no fault of her own save her own attractiveness. She does all she can to make me feel attractive, but in pictures, ugh. I just don't like to see myself.

Carey and I then drove to Latrobe to see the Senior PGA Championship. You can find a few articles at The Sand Trap (here and here) if you care to see what I was up to…

So, in a nutshell, there's my horribly written post detailing my wedding. Heh.

  2. Heeyyy! Congrats to you both!

  3. Hey, congratulations. Your anniversary also happens to be my Mom's birthday. She and my dad have been married 45 years, so you should take that as a good sign 🙂

  4. Congrats man! That is definitely awesome. My wife and I couldn't be happier or more perfect for each other.

    I wish you the best!

  5. I wish you three all the best.

  6. Congrats! That sounds like a nice,low-key day.

  7. Congratulations!

I'll cast my vote for the simple couple focused wedding any day.

Thats how my wife and I got married nearly 10 yrs ago (after living together for 9). Wedding party of 4, plus the justice of the peace. The party celebrating the wedding was held later 🙂

  8. Congrads, Erik! Best of luck to the both of you -- may you live long and prosper!

  9. They say that getting married and buying a house are some of the most stressful things you can do. Carey and I eliminated the stress in getting married by doing it on the cheap and easy, but we knew that...

  10. My wife and I had a small wedding as well, and I too stumbled a bit over the line/s with "God" in them, as we'd checked the box that said Non-religious. 🙂

Congratulations, Erik; I stumbled onto "A crush realised" while Google-searching for Suicide Girls (don't ask :)), and it was a great read. I'm very happy to see that you got the girl in the end.

  11. Last year, I had a QotD as my only post on the day of my wedding. I didn't get around to writing about getting married until four days later. Well, it's now a year later and I'm still married. Whew!...

  12. [...] the marrying hype story, I found this comment by Erik Barzeski particularly [...]

  13. Your post wasn't horrible at all. Unromantic -- yes. But horrible -- definitely not.

Congratulations for marrying your best friend! That's what I intended to do at the start of my puberty years. 😉 But I ended up marrying a guy I was in-love with. I guess this is not bad at all. After days, weeks, months and years of being "forced" to be together, he ended up becoming my best friend. 🙂
