QotD: Use Cron?

Question: Do you use cron?

My Answer: Yes, and frankly, it's one of the best things to happen to the Mac OS. God forbid you try to run something scheduled in Mac OS 9 - it wouldn't happen if you were logged out, the machine froze or crashed too frequently, etc.

  1. Yes, cron is one of my favorite things. I'm not so much a fan of launchd yet... I still use cron in Tiger.

  2. Yeah, I use cron. I'm migrating to launchd though. Launchd is pretty damn cool and it is really easy.

  3. Yes. I run a cron job on one of my machines to do a mysqldump on my webservers several times a week to backup the database. I use Deja Vu on my powerbook with a cron job to back up every night to my server.

  4. well, I use cron at work, mostly on our Solaris, FreeBSD, and Linux servers. (The Solaris machines are almost all gone .. one left, and hopefully it will be gone soon) .. I don't think I've ever actually used it on Mac OS X.

  5. Unfortunately, cron only tries to run when the computer is on. So if you turn your Mac off every night, cron tasks may not run. If you install 'anacron' (available from your usual sources of Unixy software) then everything's hunky-dory.
