Software Gnomes

We've never gotten an email like this:

Hello, today I discoverd your crappy software on my machine. I just wanted you to know that you have a f----d up piece of s--t for a product. I plan to forward your company information to the proper authorities since you think it is OK to install it on peoples machines without permission. I consider this kind of thing disgusting and will make sure you are not allowed to continue this practice. Promise.

Uhhhhh…

  1. I've never had one of them either. I wonder whether it's a Windows phenomenon. On a Mac you usually drag and drop to install. You know what software you've got - you put it there - but most Windows apps use automated installers, the program gets buried in the file system and users only see what's in the Start menu. So if you went rummaging through your hard disk after a while, you might find a surprise or two.

Of course if there are software gnomes, it would help if they could collect a registration fee while they're at it!

  2. I wonder what he found that was so disgusting. Mail Juicer saved my sorry ass once more earlier today 🙂

  3. Sounds like it's straight from the file beside the one that attacked The Coding Monkeys.

People can be very odd. Beware the software gnomes who change file types, and install software!

  4. I think that's Windows-only thing because Mac-people don't expect any sneaky spyware.

  5. Odd. Maybe it was the malware I've been reading about?

And the person is laying blame where they shouldnt?

  6. Hello, today I discoverd your crappy blog on my machine. I just wanted you to know that you have a f----d up piece of s--t for a blog. I plan to forward your RSS information to the proper authorities since you think it is OK to display it on peoples web browsers without permission. I consider this kind of thing disgusting and will make sure you are not allowed to continue this practice. Promise.
