Stolen iPod Content?

NBC, in their counter-counter-press-release on the $4.99 iTunes videos, has again alleged that most content on iPods is stolen (("…since it is estimated that the typical iPod contains a significant amount of illegally downloaded material" they say.)). It's an offensive claim first made, I believe, by Microsoft. None of the content on my iPods is stolen. None. So, here's the question to you all:

Incidentally, NBC, good luck selling your wares elsewhere. iTunes isn't just the dominant player in the marketplace, iTunes is the marketplace.

  1. None of my iPod content is stolen. That's a rather outrageous claim for NBC to make. But, you know the media...they are allowed to make outrageous claims without having to have any actual proof that what they claim is true.

  2. How about adding the fact that people don't own an Ipod to the poll ?

Or just don't answer. An "I don't have an iPod" option would be irrelevant.

From the early results, most people either seem to have an iPod free or nearly free of any stolen goods OR they have an iPod full of stolen stuff. 69% have <20% stolen content at this time.

  5. It might be a more interesting poll to ask how much of the content has been stolen since the iTMS was created.

Interesting point. I responded 1-20% because I have a few songs on my iPod downloaded back in the early Napster era. I haven't "stolen" any music for years and years.

And I agree with Erik's point that to claim most content on most iPods is stolen is ridiculous.
