No iPhone Hacking for Me

You know, since "switching" to AT&T from CellularOne, I haven't felt the need to hack my iPhone (like this tutorial for installing apps on 1.1.2). Not even a little bit. It's just so much hassle for very little real gain.

I'm perfectly content to wait to see what might be possible come February '08, and perfectly content (or more so) with the iPhone just as it is.

  1. Hassle? It's pretty simple. The tutorial you link to is a more convoluted method than what's out there.

But if you don't have a need for a twitter, instant messaging, or irc client, or voice recording, afp/ssh/sftp access, or decent games, or screen customization, or custom ringtones without an arm and a leg to give, then there's no point in mentioning it.

I've been through it all. I think they're all "convoluted."

Don't care about twitter, don't IM when I'm away from my computer (isn't that what text messages are for?), certainly don't care about IRC, don't record voice notes, don't play games (have a Nintendo DS if I really want to do that), don't dislike the current screen, and won't need an SSH client until at least March.

And last I checked, ringtones can be done without jailbreaking (new again in 1.1.2).

I'm glad you feel there's "no point in mentioning it," but I felt as though there was if for no other reason than to say I'm content with the iPhone as-is and that CellularOne customers that may have an unlocked or hacked iPhone may want to consider "going legit" so they don't have to spend an hour a day staying up on iPhone hack progress or fearing the next iPhone update from Apple.

  3. The press release at Crap One's site says December 9 🙂 I'll be heading into the AT&T in Kansas City that day to see how I can enrich my cell phone experience.

  4. I agree, Erik. I had my iPhone jailbroken before the 1.1.1 update. After I restored and updated, I didn't want to bother with it again. Very little gain, indeed, for what it takes. I, too, will wait and see what the SDK brings.

  5. I had (still do, actually) a jailbroken AT&T (currently running 1.1.2) iPhone, purely to unlock it to use with t-mobile here until the O2 iPhone was released.

Now it has, given it a couple of weeks to make sure there were no bad problems, and picked up an O2 iPhone last week, and I really can't be bothered jailbreaking it. Having to downgrade to 1.1.1, run jailbreakme, run oktoprep, update, run the jailbreak again, argh. Way way too much work.

Ok, so I did just use my AT&T iPhone to connect to IRC this weekend (left my work laptop at work encoding video 8 hours of video), but still, way too much effort to do it again.
