QotD: Afterlife

Question: If you found out there was no afterlife in any sense of the word, how would you change your life?

My Answer: I'm not sure that I would. I've lived my life by religious rules, but I'd consider them simply moral rules: don't kill people, don't be a jackass, love your family (but not your neighbor's wife), etc. I don't think the lack of an afterlife - or the presence of one - would change my life one way or the other.

  1. I'm an atheist & I don't believe in an afterlife, although I don't think you need to believe in god to be a good or moral person.

  2. Better yet, what if you don't believe in God and find yourself in heaven, at the gates, with no explaination for yourself?

How would that make you feel?

  4. what if you don't believe in God and find yourself in heaven, at the gates, with no explaination for yourselfThat's a question you cannot answer, really... "I don't believe in X.." "but what if you do?". It doesn't work that way. However, since this question pops up a lot in this kind of discussion, and is an integral part of Pascal's Wager, here's an answer: I would be happy to have Him evaluate my life as He sees fit. I don't believe in a God or an afterlive, but if I read the teachings of Jesus (or those of Buddha, which I like a whole lot more) I'm trying to live my live by most of the "rules" anyway. If at the Pearly Gates I'm judged by those rules but rejected because "I'm not a believer" then I guess I don't want to enter heaven anyway.
