MovableType Has to Go

I'm renewed in my focus to get WordPress to work here at NSLog(); and, eventually, at The Sand Trap. Why?

% uptime
10:02AM up 53 days, 19:41, 1 user, load averages: 52.10, 79.45, 53.96

Seriously. Why? About 40 instances of my mt-comments.cgi (not the actual name of them) were running. I've renamed it - along with the TrackBack and Search scripts - pending further… whatever. Perhaps I'll re-enable it later this afternoon as a test, but for now, it's going to remain disabled.

If you'd like to comment, please email or IM me. The info is in the sidebar under the buttons.

  1. Well, I've imported my data (it took four hours) and now I have to go about setting up the joint, if that's possible.

I've already noticed that WordPress doesn't support the "entry/extended entry" duo, and that makes me sad. 🙁

  2. Best of luck with the move.

According to a post on the [forums][1]: You can manually use the <!--more--> tag. Where ever you insert that in your post, it stops, with a link to the single page view.

  3. My wordpress.com blog (that I never use) has a filed "Optional Excerpt" which might do what you want... maybe? Perhaps not perfectly though.

You used to be able to put a comment (like !--extended--) into the entry block to do what you describe too.

  4. Patrick, I think Plaid is pointing out that you can use the mark to do this now, but I'm not sure.

Currently I'm trying to figure a few more things out (like why in the heck TrackBacks are handled in the admin comments area, how to get mod_rewrite to properly handle all the old URLs, etc.), then I'll try to figure out how to hack the template to get a look I want.

At least this page will help me separate TrackBacks from comments in my posts.

  5. I have no idea if the comment I posted actually works: I just googled for a solution. I've never tried it--I don't use extended entries, though I might be starting some soon.

  6. I do not have a production MT weblog running but being a perl programmer I would have to ask if you have MT running under a persistent environment such as mod_perl or FastCGI. Here are links I found related to the subject:

  7. David, this site is now running WordPress. FastCGI and mod_perl wouldn't have done a darn thing (and mod_perl was being used, yes).

  8. Wow, awesome!! Congratulations...I'm glad you got it working. 😀

Just a note, you may want to update to WP 2.0.5, if you haven't already. Updating is a cinch, really. It's like doing an install (and nothing like an import 😉 ).

Have yet to update mine, but I will within the next hour or two. Here's the link:

If you haven't edited any of the core files, just delete them and replace with the files from the package. If you have edited any of the core files, then you'll need to put your edits into these files, too.

I'm sure there's a way to separate Trackbacks out, I'm using a theme (it's more like a full-fledged mod, though) called K2 and it does that. I'm not a PHP expert, but if you download K2 I'm sure you could pick apart the code and insert it into your own theme.

Awesome, though...congratulations on the move!! You even got to keep your comments...I had to leave those behind on my move from LiveJournal to WP.

  9. Well, my MT blog has been hit by comment spam flood. The problem with MT is that once mt-comments.cgi was requested, the entire Movable Type application was loaded. And my server simply stops responding under comment spam flood (evil bots). Just to provide you some interesting states. I've notice in one no particular minute, there were 114 requests to mt-comments.cgi, and in 12 days period, there were 20555 attempts to flood comment spams. (mine site is not that popular.)

As for me, I decided to stay with Movable Type, and my solution was to install mod_security, it works perfectly 🙂

  10. Matt (the creator of WordPress) just released mt-export-split.

I know it's a little late for you, but if you happened to find a friend in the same situation, it may be helpful. 🙂

I still have to move The Sand Trap over. I may use it for that. Or perhaps not - TST's export is only about 9 MB. I can probably handle that on my own.

I will have to watch out for this massive bug, though.
