My iPhone 3GS Upgrade Price

As a valued AT&T customer, AT&T can offer you an early iPhone upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. You may qualify for a standard iPhone upgrade on 01/21/2010.

$299.00* — 8GB iPhone 3G (black)
$399.00* — 16GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)
$499.00* — 32GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)

Do I care? Not one bit. I knew it was a two-year deal when I signed up. In fact, I'm quite pleased that I can upgrade six months early. That's cool.

To those of you whining out there: on what grounds do you feel you've got a legitimate complaint? Seriously?

P.S. I have a first-gen iPhone I could sell someone. In great shape. If someone wants it for $250-ish, I might be tempted to upgrade early because the wife would also be upgrading.

  1. Did you check your upgrade price at AT&T or the Apple Store? I own a 1st gen iPhone. AT&T tells me that I'm eligible for the lower prices ($99..$299) while Apple gives me the full prices. Not sure why there's a difference, but if you are considering upgrading then I would check both locations to confirm your prices.

I don't understand the complaining either. If you signed a contract, you signed a contract. It's not like the 3GS is all that more compelling than the 3G.

I checked at . I'm not eligible - my wife got my first-gen iPhone (she might be eligible, and then we could switch SIM cards), but it's really not worth the hassle. I can wait six months. Like you said, it's not THAT much more compelling.

  2. Weirdly I qualify for the full discount only a year after getting the 3G.

  3. I believe they want at least a year or 18 months out of your contract before they will give you the subsidized price. It's worth it to wait until you can qualify, which for me is this December.

The free OS 3.0 update, which will be out on the 17th will enhance our existing iPhones a great deal as it is, so the wait to buy a 3GS will be less unbearable.

  4. Sell the old one at -- they gave me $269 for my "old" iPhone 3g (16gb)...
