Best Book You’ve Read Recently?

Just looking for recommendations: what's the best book you've read recently?

  1. Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. I recommend starting with the City Watch series of books:

Or at least the first two: if you like those you may want to go back to the beginning of the books. In total, there are almost forty novels based in Discworld:

The order of the novels doesn't really matter, as long as you read the ones about a particular character or group in order.

Tom Standage's "The Victorian Internet" (on the history of the telegraph) and "Where Wizards Stay Up Late", on the history of the early 'net.

    The books of Edward Tufte.

"At Day's Close: Night in Times Past" a history of how night was been viewed by (Western) society over the centuries. Two other books in the 'historical research genre':

. The Dirt on Clean: An Unsanitized History
. Uncommon Grounds: The History of Coffee and How it Transformed Our World

There are also books discussing various numbers (pi, phi, e) that are interesting if you have an interest in math (and history).

  2. Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything
    Awesome.

  3. Sailing Alone Around the World by Capt. Joshua Slocum. It's a memoir by Slocum about his single-handled circumnavigation of the globe in his sailboat "Spray". He was the first person to sail around the world, alone.

  4. I recently finished Escape From Bellevue an really enjoyed it. It's an autobiography about a rock star and his battles with sobriety and faith. It gives a lot of insight into the industry and the lifestyle.

  5. Reasonable Faith by William Lane Craig

  6. The Lost Fleet by Jack Campbell. I read the first two but there are five, with a sixth in the batch.

It's Sci-Fi, with spaceship battles etc, but it's the first time I see an author take the finite speed of light into account 🙂

  7. Cosmos - by Carl Sagan.

Really blows your mind about how vast the universe is.

  8. Ok, I have to recommend "The Shadow Of The Wind." I was down in Mexico on a surf trip, found this on the local cantina bookshelf, started reading it on a chaise lounge in the shade in front of the surf break, and it sucked me right in 🙂

  9. drop city by tc boyle. unbelievable writing and a very good sense of humor.

  10. "The Shadow Of The Wind." by the same other was very nice, i havn't still read the book you asking, but i ll and do inform.
    thanks

  11. "Eclipse" i just finished reading it, loved that book.

  12. I would have to say the best book I've read is Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich". Every time I read it, I pick up something different and find it to be a sure thing in terms of bringing riches into ones life.
