QotD: Dishwasher

Question: Do you use your dishwasher to store dishes after they've been washed, or do you put them away every time?

My Answer: I tend to wash dishes and unload as necessary. Dirty dishes are washed into the sink (or more often than not, left sitting in my office or on the coffee table, a habit I need to break) and left until the next washing. Sometimes, a plate or a cup might go through two to three washes before it's used. This, I realize, is one thing I must change soon. It works well if you're a bachelor. It doesn't work well when you have others to deal with. Particularly if they also leave dishes sitting around the house!

  1. I always unload after the dishes have been cleaned. I don't like dirty dishes lying around the counter or sink.

  2. I put my dishes away.

I generally don't pre-wash dishes in the sink before putting them into the dishwasher as many people seem to do. I have heard the excuse "Oh, if I don't prewash, then the dishwasher won't get the dishes clean." It's a dishwasher. If it doesn't wash the dishes clean, then replace it with one that will.

We collect the dirty dishes in the dishwasher. We generally wait until the dishwasher is full to run it. But we do a lot of cooking so it's pretty common to run the dishwasher nightly or every other night. Generally we start the dishwasher before bed and empty and put away the dishes in the morning.

And of course the cabinets closest to the dishwasher are the ones we use for storing the dishes and glasses.

It's funny. Until I wrote this, I hadn't thought about how much design and process we invest in managing the dishes.

  3. I wash my dishes by hand, sometimes right after I use them and sometimes after they've been lying around for awhile.

  4. 1. Fill in

    2. try to fit even more in

    3. check the rotating browser or what, are not blocked ("Hey, can this thing also clean the dish or just make it wet?")

    4. run run run (Did you check the salt, and the .. hmm.. "polish" chemical stuff thinggie?)

    5. When done, open the door shortly, and close it almost .. almost

    6. Wait a few minutes uhm hours until its dry

    7. Remove

because... yeah... we also use it for dirty dish until its full, but if it takes to long.. *gg*

I honestly say, I normally don't wish the dish with a towel afterwards, except sopme special Verres Du Vin or so, because.. well i dont care 😀

PS: Dont you all think apple should redesign its website? Ar - at _least_ remove the tabs ? I think so.

  5. I wish I had a dishwasher. 🙁

I do the dishes by hand, and the next time I need something I put it away if it's dry and then get what I need.

I am also a firm believer in "dishes dry themselves just fine on their own and do not need a toweling".

  6. I live with three other housemates (four if you count the live-in boyfriend of one of the girls), and I'm a little more obsessive about cleaning than they are. To this end, I've come up with a simple system that keeps me happy as long as the sink and counter are relatively clean, and there's at least one clean pot and saucepan in the cabinet.

I simply have one fork, one knife, one spoon, one mug, two glasses, a bowl, and a plate. I keep them in my cabinet in the kitchen. As soon as I'm done using a ware, I hand wash it and put it in the cabinet. That way I always have my clean dishes. I let the others deal with the dishwasher etc. (I never entertain guests so that's not a problem -- if hanging out with my gf, I go to her house, and if with friends, we go out to eat.)
