Out-of-State Car Registration

The process is a bit more complicated than I had hoped:
- Buy car (in Ohio, in this case).
- Wait about four weeks for an Ohio title (from Ohio).
- Take OH title, vehicle, driver's license, proof of insurance to notary.
- Convert title to PA title.
- Pay taxes and buy license plates (custom or otherwise).
- Wait for plates and stickers to arrive.
So, looks like I'll have that temp tag for quite awhile and that Carey will be driving a car that says "IACAS" for quite awhile too. 🙂
Incidentally, I have yet to find any auto accessories stores in Erie. I don't want to buy an air filter, but I may want to buy a VW keychain or something. South Florida had them all over the place.

I'm pretty sure you bought out of state because of availability, but was it cheaper that way, regarding taxes and fees? Or did it cost you more?

The car itself was much cheaper than the dealer here in PA could offer (and the right color, and so on). The taxes were the same - I just didn't pay them in OH because OH can't take PA taxes. I had to pay those in PA.

I found this blog entry through a Google search. I know its old, but I'm looking to do the same thing (PA resident, buy car in OH, need to register it back in PA). In OH I know you don't pay taxes, but did you have to pay something to get it titled there, and then again to transfer it here?

We did nothing to get it titled in Ohio. We bought the car, paid the price, and drove it home. Once here, we paid the taxes and got the title. We paid only for the car in Ohio.

I also found this site through a google search. I have a question.
You probably purchased from a private party. What is the procedure when it comes to dealer purchases. I think the law in many states is that a local Driver's License is required to register a car. Also, dealers are required to register all cars they sell. Kind of like a catch 22.
Any ways around the complexities of purchasing a car from an out of state dealer?

That's not the law in any state I've seen.

I wouldn't call it complex. You buy the car, you return, you register it with your local folks and pay the tax. It wasn't a hassle.

I came across this on google as while and hope somebody will still read this. If thats how the titling is done from a dealer then does nebody know how to do it from a private party? I am a pa resident as well and am looking to buy a used car from a private party in OH.

Do I need to have a PA license to get my Florida car registered?
I am moving to pittsburgh from Miami and just curious to know if I need to get my license changed to PA before registering my car in PA. or I can do the PA car registration without having a PA license.
Please help. Thanks.
