Clearing a Selection with the Keyboard

In the Finder, if I select all the items in a list view, how can I de-select all the items and select only the top or bottom item? I can type a few letters, and the "clear" button near my number pad seems to work, but why don't the up and down arrow keys? This tactic works in apps like iTunes.

  1. This does work in column view, which I also consider a list. But I guess you mean in list view, in which I was also surprised to discover the up and down arrow has no effect.

You're right. I mostly use column view, too, which is why this is infuriating. I'm going to file a bug now. Different behavior in the same application can't be right.

  3. Just an idea, since I don't have Finder handy to test this at the moment, try pressing Escape to clear the selection and then Home/End to select the first/last item?
