Got an HD-DVD Player

Today I bought an HD-DVD player for the Xbox 360.
Previously, they were $179 everywhere. Last night, I saw that they were down to $129 on Amazon.com and Toys 'R' Us. So, I picked one up today at Toys 'R' Us and printed the form for 5 free HD-DVDs. A few of the movies are worth the effort.
Oddly, today at Amazon.com, the price is back up to $179. At ToysRUs.com, it's $129. I bought mine in a local store (after returning one I bought ten days ago to Gamestop), so if you're trying to track one down, I recommend calling or dropping in to a brick and mortar Toys 'R' Us.
The timing of the price drop couldn't have been better, either: two HD-DVD titles from NetFlix just arrived. I was a day or two from opening the "overpriced" HD-DVD drive.

I'd love to hear what you think of the player. When I attached mine and played my first movie, I was less than impressed. I had a very nice Denon upscaling player, so I guess my expectations were a bit out of whack. There was definitely more sharpness and detail, but I guess I was expecting an epiphany, and all I got was a pleasant surprise.
I'm glad I have the HD player, and wouldn't return it, but I was a bit bummed out that I wasn't blown away.

Same here, but it's about what I've expected. Watch an hour or two of SD and then put your HD-DVD player back on and you'll be impressed. It's tough to be impressed by HD-DVD if you're regularly watching TV at 720p or 1080i. You notice fewer compression artifacts, but it's not a whole step up or anything, no.

As of today, HD-DVD is pretty much dead. Oh well - I'll get my money's worth out of this doohickey throughout the rest of 2008, and I'm glad the "high def disc war" may end soon.
