Apple/Universal

The comments at /. are fairly positive so far.
Wow. I have goosebumps. Wow.
Will it happen? I don't know. But even if it doesn't happen, what's this news story already accomplished? It's reminded people of Apple's anti-DRM stance. It's reminded them of their digital hub strategy. It's reminded them of their iPod. It's reminded them of QuickTime. It's reminded people of "Rip. Mix. Burn."
Apple stock is down a buck or so on the news, but as someone pointed out, Wall Street hates it when one company (potentially) spends $6B on a debt-ridden company.
Wow.

If Apple were to own Universal, I could see either incredibly good things or incredibly bad things. Either way it would be very interesting.

The Universal
I just hope that whatever action the management takes is carefully considered--it would be a shame to see Apple falter, AOL Time Warner-style, over a $5 billion experiment!

The merge (though hardly believable) can be used to lower prices significantly, which may really change the well-established bloated world of music and mass-media industry. It is a direct threat to both pirates and behemoths like Warner Bros and Sony Music, which are allies in robbing musicians and their listeners. That is why I don't believe it's possible, because they cannot risk their multibillion budgets and will die to survive.
