QotD: Street Smarts

Question: Are "street smarts" and "common sense" the same thing? Why or why not?

My Answer: I'm going to go with no. Street smarts is something gained through experience, the "knowing the ins and outs" of a system. Common sense is more innate, a second nature of sorts. Street smarts is knowing how to talk your way out of painting a fence (Tom Sawyer), and common sense is knowing what time of year best suits painting a fence to begin with. Or something like that. Street smarts is a "savvy" of sorts, and common sense is a natural ability to see the "well, duh" in every situation.

  1. Yeah...exactly. You either have common sense, or you don't...street smarts you can gain...if you don't have it. Sometimes, some street smarts are based in common sense, but um..yeah..right on the head there erik

  2. It's frightening how many people don't have either.
