Further Proof that Dave Winer is a Jackass

As if the world needed more, the discussion following the commentary on Dave's CSS rant shows what an immature ass the guy is and always has been.

Jason speaketh thusly:

Damn, Dave -- how many times did your users ask Userland for help, never ever get a single response, and feel high and dry? How often did you show any interest, immediate or otherwise, in fixing the buggy software that you had released, rather than flying on to the next new feature?

I'd recommend issuing comments like yours in private email, Dave, since putting them into public comment threads means that people can see the boiling hypocrisy represented therein. (Not to mention the overwhelming lack of understanding of CSS, which by all accounts is now considered to be a basic building block of the web.)

And Dave respondeth thusly:

Jason, butt out. This is none of your business.

So much for an open line of communication. Dave's now trying to control the content on other people's sites? Dave, a key guy in the XML arena, pushes XML as a way for machines to talk to each other, but many times it seems his inter-machine communication skills is orders of magnitude better than his inter-personal communication skills.

Y'know what, the guy pisses me off so much sometimes, I'm just not even gonna touch it. It's not worth my time. Go read around and decide for yourself. I'll leave you with this, however, from Zeldman:

Dave Winers Userland Software has released products that make life easier for independent web publishers, and has contributed to major XML-based protocols that facilitate syndication and web services. Mr Winer has for years written prolifically on his personal sites, and in so doing has encouraged others to create personal sites and blogs, thus fostering aspects of the web's independent content movement and helping to create a friendly climate not only for his company's products but also for competitive publishing tools including Blogger and Movable Type.

If only he weren't such an ass…

In fact, I'd say that Mr. Winer's attitude is the biggest piece of advertising for Blogger and Movable Type. 🙂

  2. Too bad Winerlog (http://winerlog.inspiredsites.net) is down; it was a pretty funny site.

  3. I have to agree. I mean the guy is incredible. Some time ago he went out and declared XML to be broken. Broken. Yeah, because he didn't, or don't, understand namespaces. I'm not even kidding.

Now, he admits to not understanding why one would want to seperate content from formatting. And he's supposed to be an XML-wizard, or atleast an XML-advocate.

I'm having a hard time trying to respect that.

  4. I think it shows that Harvard doesn't do background checks. If they would search the web, they would see a lot of issues with his company, his rudeness, and just his asshole-ness. Few Programmers love him, but everyone else wishes he would go away.

  5. Dave Whiner?

Recently Dave Winer has been made some comments about CSS and his apparent dislike for it. He claims that it

  6. What 'net technologies need is another crazed egotist pushing his agenda at the expense of the community as a whole. Wasn't LSD use by programmers supposed to create an egoless environment?

  7. It's just too painful to read what he writes. Tortured logic doesn't help, either. Zeldman is a positive force on the web, and then Winer writes this about him:

I don't have time to get into arguments with you and Zeldman and all your minions. I'm supporting a few dozen users now and getting ready to support a few hundred. I'm not fighting a battle against the Evil Empire and neither are you. I can't wait until you decide to help me and I won't throw out my solution until you give me one that works, and I don't see why you make me jump through this fucking hoop every damned time Bryan.

    David Winer wa baka desu.
