QotD: Routine

Question: If you could change one thing about your daily routine, what would it be?

My Answer: Ignoring all the silly, trite answers (not having to go to work, waking up next to Shania Twain, etc.), I'd have to say "showering." I don't seem to find showering to be as pleasurable as some people find it, and it's largely a time when I can't multitask. Thus, I've become king of the three-minute shower. Still, the total time spent is about ten minutes. Ten minutes, twice a day, 365 days a year is… over 121 hours I could have spent doing something else!

  1. Meditate. My daily routine used to provide about 1/2 hour for introspection and deep breathing before the wife got home and the house was made a cacophony of motion as dog were fed and I had to think of what to make for dinner. Then I decided that I couldn't deal with 7:30 start times at work and bumped my quittin' time back to 4:30, now the time for introspection is gone. I wonder if my extra 1/2 hour of sleep in the morning is worth more than 1/2 hour of quiet time after work....

  2. I would check my blood sugars 6-8 times daily, count my carbohydrate count, and remember to add insulin at every meal. In short-- I wouldn't be diabetic anymore.

  3. Eat breakfast. I've never been able to eat directly after waking up -- I have no appetite at all, no matter how hungry I am, and forcing myself to eat makes me feel sick and uneasy for the rest of the day.

So I usually never eat anything before noon.

  4. Be a morning person, in the sense that I could wake up, shower, and have breakfast before starting my 6:30 AM EST day.

  5. I have to go with Ryan-- being a morning person would triple the value I get from any given day... though it would rob me of my nighttime productivity. Oh well.

On the subject of showering- it's the kind of thing I think we could all do without, but I'm acutely aware of how dirty I am at the end of the day.. if only there were an instantaneous solution. The same could be said for all elements of personal grooming: teeth, face, hair, nails.. it's all time down the proverbial drain. Damn drain.

  6. I'd cut out commuting; an hour a day, five days a week really adds up (yes I realize it could be worse, but it could also be a lot better).

Showering would be my second choice, though. It'd be great to be able to roll out of bed feeling clean and refreshed.

  7. When I'm brushing my teeth, combing my hair, cutting fingernails, or otherwise grooming myself, I can also be reading, talking on the phone, watching the news, etc. Those are difficult to do in the shower. I suppose I could get a shower radio and at least listen to some news, but with my luck, I'd get the five minutes of commercials when I went in to shower.

  8. I like to shower, eat breakfast, and get dressed so I'd definately be leaving all that in. Getting from "in the bed" to "out of the bed" is really difficult though. I'd like to permenantly keep other people out of my morning routine, because I like to be able to think/meditate by myself for that first half-hour of the day.

  9. I've got a fix for you Erik. This will cut your showering time in half: shower once per day! 😉
