QotD: Death

Question: What's the closest you've come to death?
My Answer: I once spun out doing 45 on a highway, across the median (a big grass dip in the road) and across the three lanes of traffic on the other side. It was late at night, and it was raining a bit, so there were very few cars on the road. I stopped a few feet from the guard rail but safely out of the way of oncoming traffic.

I was driving during a low blood sugar reaction, unbeknownst to be, and I pulled out into traffic in front of a bus. The bus slammed into my car, just a few inches behind the driver's seat. I walked out of the car without a scratch.

I've died a few times in my dreams -- it felt so real that it took some time for me to realize that I'm still alive when I woke up.
In real life, I've already had sinus suppuration (dunno if that's the correct term) a few times -- once it was so bad that I was begging for death...

the closest i've come to death is falling 20 feet off a cliff that was above a boulder field on a hill. the only thing that kept me from dying was getting wedged between a tree and a boulder. if that hadn't happened, i would've rolled and tumbled for at least another 50 feet. i have scars on both my knees, elbows, and wrists; i scratched my entire chest and side very badly; and i couldn't move my back for days. the only thing i remember between the rock crumbling in my hands and me being in immense pain as i slammed into the tree is looking at the same tree while i was upside down and thinking, "oh shit."

Well, it might have been the time I dozed off behind the wheel on my way home from work, hit a mailbox post made out of a telephone poll, spun across the road, and ended up in a ditch.
Or the time I dozed off behind the wheel on my way home from work (seeing a trend?), took out a fire hydrant, flipped my car, and spun around on the roof.
FWIW, I'm much more careful about when I drive. There are some in my family who think there may have been a CO leak in the car, which has now gone to car heaven.
There were also the two times I spun out on icy highways. Fortunately, the roads were empty enough that I had time to go all the way to the left lane, back to the right, and come to a stop. I was completely awake on those occasions 😉
