QotD: Devil’s Advocate

Question: How often do you play Devil's Advocate?

My Answer: Fairly frequently. I'm a firm believer that you don't truly know something until you can argue it from either side of the fence. Sometimes, I'll let people paint me a certain way (or try to get me to support an argument that may not necessarily be my stance) just to see if I can support it. It's fun, and it's good exercise for the mind.

  1. All of the time, much to the annoyance of my friends sometimes.

  2. But of course! How could one not?

  3. Very very often.

  4. Not so often, but it does happen from time to time -- especially when I am dealing with someone who is incredibly unbalanced toward a particular view.

  5. Musings of an Internet Troll

It's such and ugly word, troll. I've been called worse, but as I look at my on-line activities on various Blogs and message boards I have to face the conclusion that perhaps that is what I am. The Jargon file...

  6. I do it quite a bit. I have found that some people tend to dislike it quite a bit and think that I am just trying to make an argument. Of course, I am not. I prefer the term 'debate' ;-).

  7. I play devil's advocate constantely and with vigor! It is actually fun because what YOU say can make anything and anyone agree or disagree with you. It is the feel of having so much power so easily and swaying people with just a couple of words and views. Whatever you do can make the argument more heated, and that is what I like to do! It is fun to push people on your views and their's and how much they will actually defend their ideas until they break, if they do. Is playing devil's advocate wrong? now that is a question to be asked!
