QotD: VersionTracker

Question: Do you have a VersionTracker account?

My Answer: Yes. However, they've just asked me to renew and I don't believe I will be. What does it offer? I never visit MacFixIt anymore, so a bundle promotion won't lure me into their Web again either. As a developer, I haven't seen any benefits, and I rarely worry about keeping as up-to-date as I used to. I tend to hear about updates within 12 hours through means other than VersionTracker.

  1. I got a free VT account with my .Mac account. I never use it though and I won't renew it if/when they ever ask me to. I don't care for VT anymore. I like MacUpdate.com better. The interface on VT is kind of ugly, imo. And I think VT removed the link directly back to the developer's page, which makes it much less useful to me. MacUpdate has a nice big link, "More Information", on every page, which takes you right to the developer's site.

Also, a guy I work with knows the guy behind VT and, well, he doesn't speak too highly of him.

  2. I have to say that even witht he 'free' account as a .mac member, I don't use VT as much as I used to.

  3. Not a fan of VT. I'm a Mac only guy, so it makes sense to me to support Mac only places. That's why I use and highly recommend MacUpdate.com for all of my software tracking. They are Mac only and are not out to get rich (I know the owner personally - he is a real standup guy), but rather to support the Mac community. Check them out, it's free!!!!!!!! MacUpdate
