Question: What is the single most important lesson that any religion teaches us?
My Answer: That there is something bigger than us.

my answer (although yours is a great one): to love and respect one's self and others

Empathy and compassion, the parts that are all too often ignored by the religious, especially those whose Bible falls open to well-worn pages full of smiting.
I dunno about the "something bigger than us" thing. It's often put into practice as meaning "my god is bigger than your god, so I'm better than you". For example, General Jerry Boykin, who said: "Well, you know what I knew, that my God was bigger than his. I knew that my God was a real God, and his was an idol.â€
It's also easy for some people to rationalize mistreatment of their fellow man because they're just following orders of something bigger than them.
None of this should be construed as meaning I think you are one of these people.
