Question: What's the number one rule of design?
My Answer: Don't be afraid to let your own personality flow into the work.

The number one rule of design for me would have to be "Solve the problem!" (And then if you wanted to add "as elegantly as possible," that might be good.)
I'm all for more personality, however -- as long as the designer's heart is true and intentions pure.

Mine is "don't be afraid to leave an area blank".
I'm a big fan of designs with lots of open space. I did a two-page magazine layout once, where the left page had three columns of text on the bottom 20% of the height, with a header in a very large font above it, so the left page only had content on the bottom third. All that whitespace draws the attention to the header.
