Gun Debate
Posted July 5th, 2004 @ 03:53pm by Erik J. Barzeski
Many people have commented on the few gun posts I've made on this blog, and the responses have shown that this is one of the hotter topics of debate in the world today.
That in mind, I'm tempted to set up a blog with six to ten authors, divided in half on the issues of gun control. The blog would be open for comment, and authors could post as they wished, linking to studies or posting facts from books, etc. Opinion pieces would be kept to a minimum unless supported by fact, study, science, or reason.
In other words, the site's goal would be to facilitate an open and honest debate. Whether or not that's possible would, I imagine, be part of the experiment. Interested parties - for either side - should IM or email me. I'd host the site, but my involvement would otherwise be limited primarily to that of interested reader.

Sounds like a really good idea, it should be an interesting blog to read, regardless of wether you're for or against more firm gun control laws.

This sounds like a great idea to me. I've been following the various gun postings and they are each sparking the same debate, often with the same issues be brought up each time, so it seems only natural that they might be best treated in their own arena. Clearly people have strong opinions about it!
Count me in.

I'd be interested in writing on such a site. I'm British, and like many of my countrymen I believe that guns should be outlawed. I agree that people kill people, but I'd much rather try to run away from a mugger with a baseball bat than one with a gun.
I think that the figures (100 gun deaths in a year for a population of 60million) speak for themselves, but also am open to the argument that there may well be other factors to consider (bearing in mind the very different picture of Canada to the US).
In fact, I have to consider these other arguments, because I may be facing a move to the US. So, while it's easy for me to preach about gun control from my relatively gun-free land, will I be practicing what I preach from the US? Will I decide instead that if guns are going to be on the streets I am I'll need one too?

I'm a gun-owner that espouses more responsible gun usages, so it sounds like a good idea to me.

I agree with Thomas!

If you go forward with this project you should get a wide spectrum on the issue, rather than simply split in half. Here's a rough outline of the spectrum of opinion you could try to look for:
No gun control at all
Moderate gun control and enjoys guns
Guns only for hunting
Supports guns but doesn't want on
Strict gun control
Complete Outlaw of guns and strict enforcement

Personally I think it's one of those issues that everyone has an opinion on but not many are open minded on it, so you end up with a pro/anti [bush|kerry|abortion|vi|emacs|micheal moore|drugs] discussion. I think you'd find the same conversations on fark or k5....
