QotD: Funny Meats

Question: What's the most unusual meat you've ever eaten?

My Answer: I've had octopus, alligator, and shark. The rest are fairly normal. I've eaten rabbit, too, which may seem weird to some people (it's quite good cooked on a bed of rice). I'm always reminded of a bumper sticker when I think about eating animals… "If you're not supposed to eat animals, why are they made out of meat?" Take that, PeTA! 🙂

  1. Do grasshoppers count as meat?

  2. Buffalo. The Holiday Inn in Casper, WY serves buffalo burgers, but now I see it being served even here in Florida.

  3. I think the most unusual would be rattlesnake jerky, and some of my favorite sushi rolls have Unagi (freshwater eel).

  4. Funny to me: crocodile, kudu, zebra, ostrich, dog.

May be funny to others, but is quite normal to me: rabbit, horse.

I don't eat fish, so octopus, squid, eel, whale, etc is out.

  5. I tried some sheep's brain. It was not very good. On the other hand the sheep's cheek was fabulous.

  6. I've tasted rabbit (long ago), but I've kept rabbits as pets for over 10 years so it's really nothing I'd admit to out loud in the house. At least not in front of my Caroline. That would be rude. 😉

  7. I at frog a long time ago. It basically tasted like watered down chicken. The thing that was kinda gross about it was it was still in the shape of a frog after it was done cooking.

  8. I've tried Kangaroo and its probably the best meat I have had. I've tasted most normal meats and seafood's but I tend to steer clear of things like shark, whale, dolphin and other endangered species.

  9. I had ostrich at a restaurant in Austin and found it disappointingly bland.

A couple of Thanksgivings ago I made a stuffing with pan-sauteed rabbit and morel mushrooms. I called it "bunny and fungus." It was a big hit.

  10. I've never had anything more interesting than elk and boar. The ground elk beefs were splendid, though. My friend can cook like the best of them.

  11. "The Flutist for the Baltimore Philharmonic. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti."

  12. Buffalo is not unusual, I'm afraid to say. Not on the West Coast, anyhow. Or maybe it's unusual but simultaneously ubiquitous? You can buy it at many grocery stores--including Costco--in the form of frozen patties for burgers.

  13. I've had beaver meat... that's some sick shit.

  14. I take part in eating badger and cat quite regularly. The meat is great; you should try it.

  15. I doubt scrapple actually qualifies as a "meat" per se, it's more of a pigpaste made up of whatever's left of Babe once the good stuff's been cut away. Regardless, it's definitely the strangest of all "used to be an animal" things I've willfully ingested (others incl. alligator, rabbit, octopus, buffalo, ostrich, frog). I wouldn't recommend the scrapple, btw.

  16. Reading the other comments reminded me that as a kid, lamb's brain was part of my diet... I remember it as kind of tasty, but gross, so I quit.

And kangaroo meat, too. Long narrow strips of steak. Very good.
