QotD: Free Song

Question: What song should I purchase?

My Answer: Apple gave me a free song, and I'm wondering what one song you think I should purchase? Something that will make me say "gee, those artists sound really good, I should check out the rest of their stuff."

Dear Erik,

We recently sent you an Artist Alerts email with broken links. We apologize and would like to give you a song for free.

  1. Well, what genre of music do you like?

  2. Irrelevant. And if you've read this site long enough, you know. Who says I want to find something only in genres I traditionally enjoy?

  3. If you want to try something a little different than what (I think) you normally listen to, try out Anthems for a Seventeen-Year-Old Girl" by Broken Social Scene.

  4. The clip available for it is repetative, but I really enjoy the song This Fir, by Franz Ferdinand. Or maybe something a little lighter: Maybe Not, by Cat Power

  5. Black Is the Color of My True Love's Har - The Ramsey Lewis Trio. There is so much that goes on in this little song. It just bleeds with feling and one of the coolest covers of the original song.

  6. Never the Same by Supreme Beings of Leisure. It's the one song that got me hooked on them.

  7. The Postal Service - Such Great Heights

  8. Rilo Kiley — My Slumbering Heart. Catchy tune, evocative lyrics. Such Great Heights is a good one, too.

  9. Teenage Dope Fiend - Flickerstick

  10. To the Roof of the Sky is the title track from a Vigilantes of Love recording. Explore and enjoy the masters of metaphor.

  11. Try Bliss by Muse. It is a little short, but I know most of my friends love it.

  12. I'm going to suggest several songs by the same group, Guano Apes. One song from each of their three albums. They have consistently good stuff, in my opinion.

    Open Your Eyes

    Plastic Mouth

This last one is a cover, but it's damn good.

    Big In Japan

  13. Some folks I like:

    Megan Slankard

    Libbie Schrader

    Sarah Harmer

    Gary Jules

  14. Todd mentioned Supreme Beings of Leisure above. The song that got my attention from them was Nothin' Like Tomorrow, which is a great tune. I bought a couple of their albums via iTunes, but I was a little disappointed. They have some good songs, but if I want to listen to that genre of music, I prefer Morcheeba (Blindfold is an all-time fav) or Portishead.

  15. I've been diggin' "No Phone" the new single from Cake lately on the radio. And I see they have it on iTunes. You might find it repetetive though.

  16. So which one did you end up getting?

  17. None yet.

  18. Dare I suggest Marilyn Manson?

I love cutting code to the-oh so melodious tones of Marilyn and company.

And before I get flamed, I am a happily-adjusted, college-educated, married, and fully-employed technical professional.
