MP3 + Radio??

Carey's mom wants an MP3 player… with an AM/FM tuner. So, forget the iPod. She has a relatively new PC. What do you suggest?

  1. Why not just get her an iTrip with the iPod?

Other than that I would recommend the iRiver H320. This is the closest thing to an iPod in price and features you'll be able to find with radio support.

  2. Uhhh, Mark, the iTrip is a transmitter, not a tuner. She doesn't need a color screen for displaying pictures, so the iRiver H320 is overkill.

  3. I bought my girlfriend a Rio Cali for her birthday -- she likes it so much that she bought her sister the same model for christmas. It's small, light, essentially indestructible, and easy to use. It also plays well with iTunes, for what that's worth.

If it weren't for the fact that it's flash based I'd drop my iPod for it in a moment. Right now my iPod is used as much for backing up my home folder as it is for music.

  4. I have the cali as well, and it works great. However, I found on mine (and it might just be the area that I live in) that the tuner isn't the greatest. The prices of the rio devices is coming down though, so it's hard to go wrong if you are looking for something in that area. 256 meg version is the one I'd recommend, or higher if they have it 🙂

  5. Erik... iRiver. I got a 128mb model with a radio tuner for Chris so she can listen to the television while at the gym and she loves it. The only drawback is the lack of capacity, but it looks like someone above recomended a 300+mb version. My experience with iRiver has been very satisfying. Tons of great features and very easy to navigate. The only reason I don't currently own one is because I broke the last one I had and Best Buy didn't carry them any more for me to be able to get an exact trade-in for my warranty. Anything but an iRiver is second-best, I know from experience.
