QotD: Uptime and Load

Question: What's your computer's uptime output?

My Answer: 15:31 up 2 days, 6:04, 2 users, load averages: 1.08 0.64 0.49
BTW, uptime | pbcopy is a great way to copy your uptime to the clipboard. I've found that few people are aware pbcopy. It's quite handy.

Incidentally, this QotD came about as a result of The Sand Trap's load average. Check this shit out:
15:11 up 17 days, 9:16, 19 users, load averages: 69.16 59.18 49.15

Needless to say, the site is hosted on a shared server, and one of the other users is running some exceedingly intensive CGIs. Needless to say, I'm not too happy about the hogging, and I'll be considering moving the site to a dedicated plan shortly.

You are encouraged to answer the Question of the Day for yourself in the comments or on your blog.

  1. It's getting even worse: 84.99  68.36  53.86. I wonder how high it can go before the thing melts down?

  2. 91.96  73.50  56.60

  3. 106.37 87.93 65.31

    We've done it! We've broken 100!

Wonder how long Interland will take to kill the evil user and to revoke his CGI privileges. And yes, I've checked: I'm not "user1056xxx." 🙂

  4. 16:00 up 2:54, 1 user, load average: 0.13 0.15 0.09

Needless to say, I'm not heavily using the machine right now. A lot of PulpFiction and iTunes. Most of my work is being done on the PC today.

Have you gotten detailed results from tst's usage? Is it even worth it to move to a dedicated server? If this other joker is using most of the processing capability, fixing that would take care of things. But if tst is using half that, then maybe it's worth it.

  5. I don't turn off my laptop very often, and I just opened some apps:

    [~] uptime

    16:04 up 23 days, 11:20, 2 users, load averages: 1.76 0.90 0.71

  6. I have 3 primary machines. In order of Linux box, PowerBook, iMac, they output the following:

    5:42pm up 162 days, 7:39, 1 user, load average: 0.02, 0.02, 0.00

    17:43 up 9:06, 2 users, load averages: 1.78 1.95 2.06

    17:44 up 8 days, 23:27, 3 users, load averages: 1.00 0.91 0.62

Now, hmm... why did I have to reboot my PowerBook this morning??

  7. 16:08 up 45 mins, 2 users, load averages: 0.46 0.41 0.39

I just had some overheating drive issues that led to me rebooting. Bah!

  8. 8:26 up 15 days, 21:36, 2 users, load averages: 0.60 0.62 0.47

I only have to reboot after system upgrades.

  9. 04:57:10 up 171 days, 19:37, 2 users, load average: 0.07, 0.02, 0.00

My linux fileserver. It'll go down sometime soon, I need to move it.

  10. 22:30 up 6 days, 8:26, 1 user, load averages: 0.49 0.44 0.68

    (PowerBook Ti 800)

This is about average for me. After about 7 days I reboot because I find PhotoShop starts going crazy.

On the dedicated server option, I am using Servint.net Virtual Private Server. It basically gives you a virtually dedicated server with all the perks. Because it is shared, it is much cheaper. Because it is "dedicated", you get root access and no control panel, whm-cpanel, or plesk. They also have 24/7 phone and email support. Just my $.02.

  11. 8:22 up 3 days, 21:15, 2 users, load averages: 0.63 0.54 0.41

  12. 15:51 up 1 day, 6:24, 2 users, load averages: 1.21 1.31 1.36

The power has been fluxing a lot lately.. I usually rarely reboot unless there's a software upgrade which requires it, or I'm doing some serious cleanup.

  13. My iBook whis is my main machine right now is at

    12:28 up 28 days, 13:55, 1 user, load averages: 2.44 2.29 2.02

I continue to be impressed by OS X's ability to recover from sleep instantly time after time. All the Gateways on campus tend to need to be rebooted every couple of days if not more. Heh yesterday in my Visual Basic class the kid next to me was having a fit because his Gateway kept freezing. The professor told him he should get a Mac like mine (kind of jabbing fun at me as I am the only student in the class with the iBook). I pointed out that woudl be a good idea actually as I have almost a month of uptime and a bonus is i only have to go into Virtual PC when I am working on Visual Basic assignments.

My shared web host currently is showing

Server Load 1.17 (4 cpus) in my WHM control panel.

  14. For my PowerBook G4, which is my main development machine:

    20:36 up 8 days, 8:55, 3 users, load averages: 1.01 1.59 1.76

For my Mac Mini, which is my media server & DVR:

    20:37 up 5 days, 8:57, 2 users, load averages: 1.19 0.92 0.82

    For my Linux file/print server:

    20:36:50 up 53 days, 4:12, 5 users, load average: 0.23, 0.13, 0.07
