Canon 75-300 IS USM

75-300I picked up (well, it's being shipped to me) a Canon 75-300 IS USM lens (with hood and S&H) today for $350. New, this lens sells for $450 + S&H or so (B&H charges $415, IIRC). The one I bought has been used twice and it may not have the warranty - I don't much care.

I think this lens is the one I'll be taking to the golf tournaments as mortgage payments will be taking precedent over a $1400 camera lens. I talked about the 100-400/4.5-5.6L IS a few weeks back when I went to the zoo:

I think the 75-300/4.0-5.6 IS would be ideal for the zoo ($415), but I'm also considering the 100-400/4.5-5.6L IS as well ($1415) because I'm going to need to take some pictures at a golf tournament or two in late May/early June (discussion here).

If I can't get good golf shots with this, well, it'll still be good for the zoo. And if I really don't like it, I can probably sell it for about what I paid or use it to trade up to something else.

  1. I have the same lens. The IS works remarkably well and the autofocus only "hunts" in low light. I've used it for some indoor sports photography, and though it's a little slow for that environment, for the outdoor sports I've shot it's been fantastic. I've been able to get most soccer shots faster than 1/1000 shooting wide-open (f/4.0) using as slow an ISO as 200.

    Hope you enjoy it!

  2. Here's some photos taken with this lens and with the default one. Scroll down to the eiffel tower: http://www.litux.org/photos/2004.12/2004.12.21-5-Paris/

One thing I loved in this lens is that you'll get better results in a moving car, at night, with this lens at 75 than with the original one at 56:

I've payed รขโ€šยฌ499 for it, last christmas, but it was money well spent!

  3. I bought this same lense for taking pictures at the track (Road Atlanta). It's works well, but I still don't get as close to the cars as I would like. I've used it to photograph friends playing tennis, and it's fast enough to freeze the action and for the most part the pictures are clear. My 50mm lense is noticably sharper than the 300 though.

I forget what camera you decided on. I'm considering picking up one of the new 8 megapixel, digital Rebels to complement my EOS7D. Are you still happy with the camera?

  4. Be sure to check before you go to the golf tourneys that you can bring a camera in. I'd guess practice rounds are OK, but not "money" days if it's a pro event.

  5. The XT, Andrew, and yes I'm happy. Thanks Ryan - yes, practice days only, for obvious reasons. ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Ooooohhh, very nice.

My uncle has this lens, and I've had the privilege of taking some very nice action sports shots with it. If you are interested, see here.

    Have fun with it! ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Last night I took the 75-300 IS/USM lens to the Erie Seawolves game with Carey, Little Bug, and "Bumpy." I took 125 pictures, 24 of which were quickly discarded upon arriving at home. I shot everything in sports mode at 300mm...
