QotD: Car Wash

Question: How frequently do you wash your car?

My Answer: Once every few months. If then. 🙂

Former neighbor/friend Gabe bought a Jetta in, oh, 2003 or so and washed the darn thing every day the first two weeks he had it. He slowed down to every other day for the next few months, and then to once or twice a week. Good thing he got silver - I'm pretty sure parts of the frame were peeking through at that point, but at least they matched!

You are encouraged to answer the Question of the Day for yourself in the comments or on your blog.

  1. Almost never... I keep thinking about washing it, but then invariably it rains and all of the dirt gets washed off, so I never get around to it. 🙂

  2. I have a few cars around, not garaged, that I would really like to protect from the elements. Maybe your cars don't get dirty, but the older they are, and the dirtier they are, the harder they are to wash.

I have tried the custom tarp cover thing before... Dirt blows under and gets trapped, and rain knocks some dust through. That is, it still gets dirty.

What I want to do is to provide some sort of covering that can be brushed on, that can wash off fairly easy with a power washer. Any dirt (tree sap, pollen, animal droppings) are pretty much stuck to that removeable layer. Need a clean car? Rinse with a power washer. No imbedded microcrud scarring the finish or needing more than one wash to clean.

I suppose this is the entire idea behind wax.. the coating takes the beating. I thought I might just soap up a car, the way slogans are soaped onto wedding cars, or prices onto used cars.

Am I nuts for wanting to do this, or is this a need someone might have created a product to serve?

  3. lets see... i got my car in 2001... and i've washed it.... twice?

    once every 2 years. 🙂

  4. not very often. It's in the garage most of the time when I'm not driving it, so it doesn't get too dirty.
