Dodd, 5D, and Beanies

Today I ventured into Cleveland to have a look at a Canon 5D at Dodd Camera. I wanted to get a sense for the size of the thing, and Erie's camera stores don't carry much more than $300 P&S cameras. The 5D feels great in my hands, and the viewfinder is incredible.

Canon is offering a $600 (doubled up) rebate through February 19, and the PMA show takes place from March 8-10. I may buy a 5D at the last possible moment and return it if a successor is announced. I'd put the odds of a 5D replacement coming out before the PMA show at about… 50/50 if I'm optimistic, 70/30 if I'm not.

In the evening, I took a few pictures of some Beanie Babies in the basement. I'm trying to determine whether the XTi has an issue focusing (or whether I do). I tried both AF and MF, but didn't get any conclusive results. I'll have to try the ruler trick or something.

P.S. Yes, it's all related.

  1. Few results, by the way, because the depth of field with a 50mm lens at a subject distance of two or three feet at f/2.8 is less than an inch. 🙂

  2. The 5D has the same 9 point AF system as the 20D/30D and now XTi, except that it has hidden focus points used only for AI servo, so you won't get appreciably better AF in these situations. In fact, the spacing of the 9 points is the same despite the larger size of the 5D's sensor. Extending the rebate points to a replacement for the 5D soon. What I would like for the successor to be is the digital equivalent of the EOS 3 (small bodied SLR with 45pt AF), or just a full-frame replacement for the 1DmkIIn.

P.S. I'm the guy asking about 5D deals on dpreview.com and you told me to wait 😮

I'm gonna wait, and either get a the 5D's successor, or get a 5D cheap when the successor comes out.

Yeah, the focusing issues I'm trying to find aren't related to the AF system or the location or number of AF points.

I'd still put it at 50/50 at the best. It's a tricky thing to try to predict. Predicting when we'll see new computers from Apple is much easier.

What if nothing comes out in Feb/March? Are you going to wait until September?
