YazSoft’s Speed Download

Speed DownloadTwo nights ago I read someone's suggestion to use Speed Download to pull down the 6.7 GB Leopard disk image from ADC. I'd previously used a few other download managers/accelerators, but Speed Download seems to have separated itself lately, and I figured I'd give it a shot.

It turned out to be a worthy investment: it downloaded Leopard in about 45 minutes during the middle of the day. Prior attempts to download earlier seeds often took as long as six or seven hours.

P.S. Speed Download insists on using StuffIt Expander. I deleted it (actually, I .zipped it up) on my main drive, and now I see it's found it on my Time Machine drive! Why can't it use the built-in un-.zipper?

  1. Ah, the good old stuffit. Firefox has the same "issue". I did what you did, zipped her up. Just make sure to get every copy.

  2. Hi Erik,

Glad to hear Speed Download was of good service to you 🙂

On the issue of Stuffit Expander, it has nothing to do with SD. SD does insist on using anything; it simply uses whatever tools that do the job are set to default on your Mac. In this case, I presume expander set it itself as the default and that you may have another copy of it lying around (i.e. on another partition, external drive, etc).

Hope that helps. Stay tuned, we got lots more coming 🙂

"Archive Utility" is set as the default and has been ("BOMArchiveHelper" or whatever it was called was set in 10.4). And as I said, the OS is supplying StuffIt Expander from my Time Machine (i.e. backup) drive. That's an OS bug, I'd say.
