When I was at college (RIT) there was a huge group of unicyclists that did ridiculous things: going down stairs, riding downhill mountain bike paths, balancing atop tall walls, etc. They said the key to balancing is not inflating your tire too much, keep it pliable so it can "grab" the surface a bit better.

Erik, PLEASE let me know how you fare.
One of my goals in life is to learn to ride a unicycle.
A guy on a unicycle once told me that "after a certain age, you can't lean to ride a unicycle."
I am sure he was wrong.
