Book Recommendations for the Kindle

Given that I have a Kindle 2 arriving soon, can anyone recommend any good books?

I tried to write about what I do and don't like, but I don't want to shut myself off to any "boundary stretching" options. The only things I really won't consider are comics, sci fi, and perhaps politics.

  1. Just finished The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom by Slavomir Rawicz. The true story of a Polish Cavalry officer (the author Slavomir Rawicz) who was captured by the Red Army in 1939 during German-Soviet partition of Poland. After a year he escapes from of a Siberian Gulag and treks to India.

  2. If you're looking for something more pedestrian, I just finished Denis Leary's new book. I've always enjoyed his stand-up.

I'd recommend hitting some of the classics that you haven't touched for years: 1984, etc.

  3. Check out Snow Crash and Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson.

  4. I'd recommend picking up some Michael Pollan, specifically The Omnivore's Dilemma and In Defense of Food. Both are very eye opening.

  5. My name is Daniel Madden and I just self-published my first novel "The Crimson Flower" on the kindle. I'm extremely happy with it and can't wait for people to stumble onto it. The novel follows Andrew, a distraught man who lost his wife two years ago. He cannot seem to get himself past the wrenching loss and retreats back to the home he grew up in to try and start over. There he comes face to face with the woman he was fighting so hard to forget... his deceased wife. It is a story of tragedy, hope, and inevitable closure.

I was on a trip down to a small south Texas town and this story just hit me. My mind shot from one end of it to the other, constructing bits and pieces until I couldn't hold it any longer. That very night I started frantically writing it down.

I wanted to put it on the kindle first to test the waters and see how it is received by the public. If it goes well, I'll pursue getting it published in paper. Thanks very much and I hope if you give my novel a chance, you'll take the time to let me know what you think.

    Daniel Madden

  6. Weird coincidence...one main character in my Kindle book is Curtain Eric, named after me and my good friend Eric, i.e., Kurt'n Eric; your Xbox Live tag is my friend's name first and my initials, KJB.

    Peace.
