Own a Kindle or nook?

{democracy:64}

I like my Kindle more and more. I'll probably like it more again when the Mac app is released (can't come too soon).

But I'm also starting to wonder if I backed the wrong horse. The nook will support (eventually - and I know even this isn't a guarantee) the ePub format, an open format, and I like the sound of that. I don't really mind that I can't "loan" the books on my Kindle ((To be honest, it's nice not to have to pester my friends to give me my book back. And if I want a book I still want to loan out, I buy it in physical form.)) - what bugs me is that I can't transfer all of my books from my Kindle to a nook if I decided to buy one of those, or to another reader down the road.

Some links for me:

  1. I got my Kindle about a month ago (-ish?) and I couldn't be happier with it! I've found myself doing a LOT more reading since I got it. Plus I love the instant-gratification of being able to purchase a book and *poof* there it is on my Kindle ready to read in mere seconds.

  2. David Pogue (NY Times) basically hates the Nook:

  3. The DRM factor bothers me, but I hope to get a Kindle for xmas anyway! My shelves are full, and I usually have a stack of 4-5 books on my nightstand. I've never seen one in person, but I hear the e-ink is amazing. Whispernet is cool too - read on my iphone when the kindle is at home, then have it automagically sync to where I am in the book is awesome! There are few books I want that aren't available for Kindle, but I think I can get the .lit version and convert it to a format that works.

  4. I have a Kindle, and I’ve enjoyed it so far. However, if Amazon releases a Kindle app for the rumored Apple Tablet like they did for the iPhone, the Kindle is going up on eBay pretty quickly. E-Ink isn’t all that great, and I prefer to carry around multifunctional devices.

    I don’t like the DRM, but honestly I don’t mind being locked into the Amazon ecosystem as long as they continue to release reader applications for a variety of platforms. I just hope they start working on some deals with libraries to get digital book loans on the Kindle platform.

  5. Personally I have no interest in e-book readers as I usually tend to do all of my reading using Stanza on my netbook.

  6. I beleive this technology is in very early stage. It will become much more friendly, and much much cheaper in time.
