   Definitely. I picked up a functional Apple //e from the neighbor's trash when I was a kid, and regularly cruise around during "spring cleaning" season looking for usable items.

   In college, I picked up a carpet that someone threw out in the spring and used it for that summer. Come fall, I sold it (for a few $$) to a friend who was looking for one for her dorm room. It was a good fit. It was the same carpet she had thrown out in the Spring...
